Possible trigger: abuse anonymous October 7 2010, 12:06:03 UTC
Sherlock ends up inviting John 'round for the much-exploited-in-fandom Christmas dinner, or just to meet his mother, or whatever. Mycroft can be in it or not.

Anyway, after a while John starts to see that 'Mummy' (who is a single parent for the purpose of this) is emotionally abusive in a sort of... subtle way. Not screaming and shouting and all that, the kind of thing you perhaps only notice as really harmful if you spend a while around it.

Sherlock and Mycroft never noticed it as such, not having another frame of reference.

(Inspired by this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v601/aprilechidna/asw3.png so bonus for some kind of mention of that being her idea of a work ethic.)

I remember going round to a friend's house for lunch, and him telling his mum "hey mum, I got 100% on my mid-sem test," and her only response being "oh really? well, you're improving", so yeah, I can definitely see this. :( Seconded.

LOL That sounds like my mum. When I graduated from Uni the conversation was:

"Mum, I graduated with a 4.0 GPA, the same as I've had every year!"
"Oh really? Well you could improve a little."
"No I couldn't. 4.0 is the highest possible."
"Well it's not terrible. I know you could try harder though."

Sometimes it takes nothing at all. My mom never says anything about me or how I do. She's also vehement about her policy of "if you don't have anything nice to say..."

Anoning, because the topic is not something I'm comfortable with (or, thankfully, know much about.) Let's hope, I won't offend anyone ( ... )

this is wonderfully uncomfortable and sad so far, and gives a very different twist on the 'you know how it upsets Mummy' conversation from show!canon. Hope there's more to come.
