John's Dark Past

I'd love to see Sherlock find out that a case has a connection to something John was involved with/witnessed/did in Afghanistan. John is willing to go to any lengths to keep this a secret--but keeping secrets from Sherlock is an exercise in futility.

Anon, are you me? Because I was thinking when John said "I've met them." when referring to the secret service is that he wasn't talking of just Mycroft, be he has actually MET them and augh.
Now I have this plot bunny where John was part of a black ops raid/fight/whatever that got people killed and one of the relatives want revenge or something.
The thing that prompted this was the discovery upon researching the Royal Army Medical Corps that they are expected only to fire their weapons in self-defense. Also, it's normally medical technicians that are assigned to the kind of ops we saw in the first episode opener. Someone as valuable as a highly skilled doctor would normally not be quite so in the thick of the action.
Let's just say a number of things have conspired to make me go hmmm...

I think there is a way around that if he was a part of some form of recovery crew. You know where they go into buildings to rescue captured soldiers, wouldn't they need a medical officer with them in case the victim is in poor shape, (tortured, dehydrated, blood loss, light sensitive) but would also need to be able to fight so as to be able to get in there in the first place. I don't see any military placing someone who couldn't fight in that team because then they would need to be protected and if the team gets too big they can't get in.

Come five that morning, Sherlock felt confident that he had plotted out all the relevant interactions. Andrews and Parkman had served in a unit together for several years. Geoffries, however, was a new comer. He had transferred in a year ago, six months after John was shot through the leg and shoulder

To further put John at ease, Sherlock announced they were going out for lunch. There was a Greek place that he could eat free at, so he took John down there and eventually agreed to eat one of John’s dolmades to stop him from fretting about how much Sherlock wasn’t eating at the moment

Sherlock looked back to the three men as the door shut. “Frankly, I have limited interest in your activities. I already know which of you did it, I know the other two of you know and have stayed silent to protect a comrade. I don’t care.” He leaned forwards. “I want to know about how Geoffries came to serve in this unit. from anyone, I don’t care whom

He napped for a while, maybe two hours, and then checked John’s blog, but all that was posted was that he thought Sherlock was a bastard and that he didn’t know why he had to dig up everything he could just for the fun of it

Bonus points for BAMF!John.
