Wrong Number - Original Prompt anonymous May 9 2012, 22:09:31 UTC
Sherlock and John don't meet the way they do in canon.
Instead, they meet because Sherlock accidentally sends one of his deduction-texts, meant for Lestrade, to the the wrong number. John's number.
Original prompt is here.

A/N: If you see any SPAG mistakes or if something needs to be brit-picked, feel free to let me know. If I made a time mistake, if I forgot a 'SH', or if I screwed up my formatting, please let me know. Also, I always enjoy concrit and I welcome your honest opinion. I tried to follow the canon timeline, even when it made no sense. If you recognise a case, it's most likely from John's blog, Sherlock's website, or ACD's stories.

This story is currently rated PG-13 for some bad language. It could go higher in the future; I'll let you know if it does.

I love epistolary fic, especially text fic in this fandom, and this is so enjoyable :) can't wait for the next part!

I love them too :-) In fact, I think we like the same kind of prompts because I always end up commenting on your fics, even when you write them anonymously, and you always seem to find mine.

I'm glad you're enjoying this, thank you for commenting!

Oh, Sherlock.

I love, love that you're still following the order of events - like the NZ trip from John's blog! Fantastic! ...Does John keep a blog in this universe?

Re: Wrong Number - 3e anonymous May 18 2012, 23:03:54 UTC
I'm relying heavily on John's blog for the timeline and the cases (this part was inspired by one John had to take down, so it was a huge struggle). I'm glad you like that, because I will keep doing it :-)

In this universe, John also had a therapist who suggested he starts keeping a blog. However, without Sherlock to bring him along on some crazy adventures, his entries are rare and probably look something like "I saw a funny-looking tree today". Also, without John's blog to show the world he exists, Sherlock won't become famous as he did in canon.

I'm happy you like it, thanks for letting me know!

This whole thing was brilliant!! I love it so much, and the fact that it was all written through text ♥ also, love your reference to the canon with the missing fiance. :D

I'm very happy you're enjoying this :-)

I couldn't come up with an original case to save my life, so thankfully ACD came up with loads of them I can borrow.

Thanks for reading, I hope you'll enjoy the rest.

Loving this! I like how Sherlock is jealous of John dating even when they're only communicating through texts.

I'm glad you're still reading!

That was a lot of fun to write. In my head, Sherlock would be annoyed by not having John's full attention, even if they only know each other by texts :-)

I'm loving this. I love text fics.

Hello? Have you been called to
another crime scene? Did someone
flash the consulting detective signal? lmao.

I know the fest is over, but this has gotten out of hand. It was supposed to be a short exchange followed by a meeting, but it has developed into something more, so it will most likely continue for a while.

A small change in formatting for this part because John will spend most of it in New Zealand. To deal with the time difference, I have written what time it is for Sherlock and John, but John's time is in italics.

John, I've thought about it.
We've been talking for over
two months, and yet we know
almost nothing about each
other. However, you are
familiar with how I work, and
I've seen you use my methods
once or twice.
SH

(09:05) (20:05)
Yes...?

(09:05) (20:05)
You should commit a crime.
You'd be the ideal person to
do it. Don't tell me which one,
just do it, and then I'll have
to solve it.
SH

(09:06) (20:06)
Your plan is flawed. If you're
expecting me to commit a
crime, you'll know it was me,
there won't be any challenge.

(09:06) (20:06)
Isn't how more interesting than
whom?

So it's a Schrödinger deduction?

(09:52) (20:52)
You were an army doctor.
SH

(09:54) (20:54)
Do you want me to open the box
or do you prefer not to know?

(09:54) (20:54)
Of course I want to know.
SH

(09:55) (20:55)
You're right.

(09:56) (20:56)
This is the second best part:
being right.
SH

(09:59) (20:59)
Ok, let me guess how you did
it. The adrenalin rush craving,
obviously. The wound in the
shoulder that was serious
enough to prevent me from
playing rugby, therefore
serious enough to have me
discharged from the army.
Add that to my new job at
the surgery, and you probably
deduced that I've been back
in London for less than a year.

(10:00) (21:00)
John, you've robbed me of my
third favourite part.
SH

(10:01) (21:01)
Showing off?

(10:01) (21:01)
Precisely.
SH

(10:02) (21:02)
There was something else
that led me to that conclusion,
can you figure out what it
was?
SH

(10:03) (21:03)
I have no idea.

(10:03) (21:03)
You're very authoritative.

Is that your way of saying you
enjoy my virtual company?

(10:53) (21:53)
Something like that.
SH

(10:54) (21:54)
Maybe we're on to something,
maybe that's the way of doing
it.

(10:54) (21:54)
Doing what?
SH

(10:55) (21:55)
Talking to people.

(10:56) (21:56)
I completely agree, but I didn't
think you would.
SH

(10:56) (21:56)
Why not?

(10:57) (21:57)
You have a girlfriend, friends,
people you talk to on a regular
basis and who don't make you
want to hit your head against
the wall.
SH

(10:59) (21:59)
Yeah I know. Maybe I'm a bit
weird.

(11:00) (22:00)
I don’t find you stranger than
usual.
SH

(11:03) (22:03)
It’s just…I’m in New Zealand
with my girlfriend, it’s our first
trip together, and it was
supposed to be brilliant.

(11:03) (22:03)
It’s not?
SH

(11:04) (22:04)
It’s fine. But that’s the problem:
it’s just fine.

(11:06) (22:06)
I don’t think I understand.
SH

(11:08) (22:08)
I can’t talk about this while
she’s in the room with me.

(12:02) (23:02)
No, that’s not it.

(12:04) (23:04)
It was so familiar and domestic
that it hit me: if we’re already
behaving like an old couple,
what will it be like several years
down the road?

(12:06) (23:06)
While you were in Afghanistan,
a domestic relationship was a
distant dream, something that
would happen in the future.
With your injury, it has become
the present. Maybe you’re not
ready for that dream yet.
SH

(12:08) (23:08)
Maybe not.

(12:10) (23:10)
But what if I break up with
Sarah and, one year from now,
I realise it’s what I want? I’ll
hate myself.

(12:12) (23:12)
So you’ll just stay with her in
case you decide that you want
a boring relationship? It doesn’t
seem fair.
SH

(12:13) (23:13)
I know. I’m an arse, aren’t I?

(12:14) (23:14)
I mean it’s not fair to you.
SH

(12:15) (23:15)
Why remain trapped in
something you think you should
want, when you could get what
you actually need.
SH

(12:16) (23:16)
Oh, I see you’ve done your
research ;-)

(12:16) (23:16)
I have done no such thing.
