Dragon rider AU

John's a too-brave-for-his-own-good Green rider, who won't put up with anyone's bullshit. After a serious fight with a snotty bronze rider from his Weyr, he's left with a stab wound to the shoulder. His Weyrleader worries that John's going to end up getting killed if he stays, so he transfers him to Fort Weyr, supposedly as punishment. John misses his home terribly and feels the transfer is terribly unfair. He keeps to himself in the new Weyr.

Sherlock is a Bronze rider who can tell which Holders are holding back on their tithes and which have youngsters they are hiding from search. He is also the brother of Fort Weyr's Weyrleader: Mycroft. He has a reputation for being a brilliant but untouchable asshole.

Everyone worries that that John and Sherlock are going to kill each other, and do everything they can to keep the two apart. But then John's Green rises....

Dear Author Anon!

Have to admit I know nothing about this Pern series, but I just started reading before going to work and couldn't stop! So instead of doing my job I'm sitting here with a huge grin on my face. This was so entertaining. Loved it! ♥

Yes! You understood it without having read the Dragonriders books. I'm so glad. I was reading through afterwards just thinking 'dear lord, this isn't going to make any sense to anyone'. I grew up on the books so there's just so much I take for granted about the world and the language.

This was a brilliant and satisfyingly plotty story that reminded me of all the reasons I'm fond of Pern.

I really liked the way that everyone settled into place - John with his wound and exile due to rescuing someone, Sherlock with his experiments (and of course he can speak to dragons! It's just so him!). I adored all the places when a familiar character turned up, and I could go "Aha, so that's where they fit!" (and I love your notes on all the other people that didn't quite make it into the fic because they would have turned it into a massive epic of doom rather than a handleable story :D).

I would love to read any of those other stories if you get the time and muse to write them!

I was trying to think how I could make the more 'freakish' side of Sherlock come out in a way that would piss Anderson and Sally off, and then I realised that Sherlock would talk to their dragons behind their backs - because he just wouldn't see the point in wasting time requesting permission - and it had to be written. ^_^

This prompt helped remind me of just how much I love Pern, so I'm glad the fill did that for someone else.

This was amazing, dear authornon! I read all parts in one sitting and didn't even notice the time pass. Wonderful, wonderful story! I sort of want to check out the books which inspired this now. :)

This fic is mostly based on the first two books Dragonflight and Dragonquest, though I did reference quite a few of the others. I could write an essay on them and how this fic relates to them, but I shall restrain my geekish self. ^_^ They are all well worth reading, though.

More relevantly - thank you so much. It's always lovely to know people enjoyed things, especially when they don't know the crossover universe. ^_^
