When first we practise to deceive by anonymous - http://sherlockbbc-fic.livejournal.com/4076.html?thread=10482412 - Lestrade thinks Mycroft is only occupying /a minor position in the british goverment/.
He knows him only as a kind, well-mannered, understanding man as opposite to his younger brothrer.
Mycroft tries his best to hide the fact that he's /the british goverment/.

My all-time favourite is the amazing "Puppet on a string" by kazvl http://archiveofourown.org/works/446107

It's not overly shmoopy but the characterization and the writing style are to die for (although I must say that it clashes a bit with my vision of Sherlock's character, but the mystrade is simply perfect)
