This is really amazing! I love how you took keerawa's short little story and just went to town with it. The end result is wonderful. I love the meaning behind the totems and how perfect John's is (really, all the characters). This was truly a joy to read; the writing was well-done and well-paced and everyone was in character. There was so much I enjoyed about reading this, particularly the world-building and just all the little glimpses into John's relationships with others and how not only the humans interacted, but also how the totems did, too. I thoroughly enjoyed this!

After reading Keerawa's fic I found mongoose!John hard to unsee - it really is the perfect match for his character - so small but scrappy and unexpected. I'm really glad you liked the worldbuilding and the relationships, it was really fun to imagine how the totems played into all the canon relationships. Thanks for the lovely comment!

Oh, this is just really really lovely. It's a wonderful exploration of John's character and his relationships with these other characters (and, I admit, I'm a huge sucker for magical realism AUs of all sorts). Of course he has a feline type, and oh, Mary, you and your half lies and your hidden totem.

The part with Sholto is so incredibly heartbreaking and I love how you managed to flesh out a character so the details we know of him from all of one episode have this resonating sort of poignancy. Also brb crying over John finally figuring out Sherlock's totem.

(And yess, Mycroft has the laziest big cat of them all.)

Yay, I'm glad you liked it! I love magical realism too, and the world Keerawa built was just so fascinating! I've always suspected John was a cat lover... I mean, both Mary and Sherlock have some very feline traits and look how fond he is of them both. Writing Mary, with all her ambiguity and secrets in this world was fun - so much she'd hiding!

I did surprise myself with how many Sholto feels I had writing this - I hadn't thought much about him before but imagining how he might fit into this world made me really feel for him, poor guy! At least John will get another chance with Sherlock, though he doesn't know it now.

Mycroft, so magnificent and so so lazy :P Thanks for commenting!

God, this is amazing! I saw the title, and got very excited. Excellent world-building, with each person being chosen by a totem as a child ( ... )

I'm really glad you liked it! When I read your story I felt there was so much rich characterisation and worldbuilding packed into a small space, it gave me so much to explore. I'm glad you liked the part with John's Mum, I thought it would be interesting to raise the whole nature and nurture question, how much of a totem's influence on personality comes from the individual's interpretation of it and how they let it define them (or not)... I thought it would be interesting to have Mary as a bit of a totem skeptic (though of course, she has her reasons for wanting to believe that people can change their essential natures.. and she wants to put John off asking awkward questions ( ... )

This was fabulous! I love how you've expanded on the ideas in the original story, and added so much depth. The part about Sholto's failure being due to John not being with him was heart-wrenching. And John being drawn to feline totems is great. Because of course cats have nine lives!

Thank you, I'm really glad you enjoyed it! The original story gave me so much to work with. Poor John and Sholto, their relationship does have a tragic dimension.

Hah, yes definititely! And Sherlock's only on his second so they should have a long time to spend with each other ;)
