I really enjoyed this as a What If offshoot from VM's original fic. There were definitely some things you picked up on from that that I'd completely forgotten about and so, when I went to read this one, found myself paging back and forth between the beginning of VM's fic and yours to see where the two paths diverged. You did a really great job of capturing John's anger and the sensation of him being a man at the end of his rope (especially at the beginning, but even by the end, I still had that sensation), and I really liked the interaction between all of the characters, but especially John and Sherlock. Really fascinating remix of a fascinating fic!

It was a super fic to work with. There was so much going on underneath, and I wanted to get at that... but I also needed to "fix it" because John is not supposed to be with anyone other than Sherlock! ;) Thanks for your thoughtful comment, and I'm glad it got you to go back and re-read the original too.

This is wonder. I love how well you capture John's emotions at this point in canon- betrayal, misery, guilt. Your Janine voice also feels true to canon. It makes so much sense that Magnussen would have a back up plan like that, I think it will be my new headcanon... And Sherlock followed John! Of course he did. I love the tenderness between Sherlock and John here as well as the anger. I felt in HLV Sherlock was very high handed in telling John how to react to Mary so I loved that you had him assert himself here. Great story, you breathed new life into the original. - VM.

Hello! I'm so glad you liked this. I found your fic fantastically complex, so this kind of makes explicit what I saw in it. I was actually convinced you had intended for Janine to be a set-up from Magnussen, and that the contact she was supposedly getting information from was in fact John (the information being his infidelity). And I agree with you, I think John's anger is still there, and that it has very little to do with Mary, and almost everything to do with Sherlock. But I still think they belong together. :D

I'd thought Janine probably wasn't honest about her reasons for being there but I'd conceived of her having her own reasons for that (revenge!) but in many ways it makes more sense for Magnussen to have sent her - and certainly puts an even darker slant on the whole story!

John's anger is a lot about Sherlock but he wouldn't be nearly so angry if he didn't love him and wasn't scared of losing him again. I think you get across the complexity of John's emotional situation very well.

Fabulous! I loved the nuance in John's emotions and motivations, and watching them finally get on the same page.

Thanks! It was kind of tricky maneuvering them to where I wanted them to be, but I'm glad that it worked for you. :)

The complexity of John's emotions here are stunning. And he's so very brave, at the end, committing himself to Sherlock with a statement that this is real, this is important to both of them, and if Sherlock doesn't want sex, or to be part of raising John's child, John is still in.

It's a bit like watching a man throw himself on a grenade - I'm filled with both admiration and terror.

Well you know John - if it's dangerous or ill-advised, he's generally all for it! Especially if it involves Sherlock. :)
Thank you for the comment!
