Oh wow this is lovely! I especially liked John's musings on what is means to have a leap year birthday:

Maybe there was half a second just before midnight that had been his birthday. It was hard to say. That was the only good thing about being born on February 29, that mystery. It was like having a hidden birthday, that no one had but you.It's true there's a kind of magic about the idea, isn't there? I can see this being the sort of thing a child would muse on. I don't have one, but one of my favorite characters does, so when I saw your story, I thought it would be fun to see what John did with a 2/29 birthday.

I think there had to be something there, or he wouldn't even have taken the phone, you know? Or at least done something about the inscription. It's a wound, there, and I always like to poke into those a bit.

It was really fun to riff on!

I love that Harry's phone had the one calendar reminder.

And it actually said "John's birthday" and not "Not John's birthday" <3

Aw, siblings. A little softer here, a little more comfort for John. I like him thinking about the mystery of his birthday, too -- a Mary Poppins kind of seam in time.
