I looked at the original and decided to read this first. (I'll read the original over the weekend when I have more time.) Your story conveys a feeling of foreboding, something quiet, sad, and heartbreaking. So when I saw the comments and realized Nicky's fate, I was amazed at how well you'd managed to do that even to someone like me who hasn't read a line of the original story yet.
