Wasn't it fun? I love that we're seeing Sherlock becoming a bit more human as well. I think that's 99% of John's doing, although John has probably no clue of his influence on him.
And I think Gatiss mentioned that Lestrade's name was Greg back in one of the S1 commentaries, and fandom latched on to that. Nice follow through though. I suppose he could have gone all troll-y and named him something else, knowing that fandom would have taken the name and run, but that doesn't seem like Gatiss' style.
Yeah, not Gatiss's style. Moffat's the troll; Gatiss is the idealist. At, least, that's what I gather from interviews and following them both on Twitter. Although, Gatiss, if not a troll, is a tease. He kept tweeting all this stuff in the run-up to series two. "Writing the Baskerville ep", "First day of shooting", "Today we decide how to pronounce Irene", and pics of Benny and Martin and set pieces.
