Looking at the photos of the aftermath of the train derailment in Cumbria last night, I'm surprised that only one person died. I fancy that the toll would have been higher had the train being going faster or had more passengers, though ( Read more... )

They use the 321s and 315s on First Great Eastern, although they have some nice new class 360s that are used on the lines running to East Anglia. C2C uses Electrostars, which are still current models.

I'm mildly alarmed that I know what the different trains classes are...

Having worked on the railways for a year or so, I'm quite au fait with the numbering systems too :O

Actually, it was using the new fleet of trains which are by far the safest yet, as they have many features in case of such an incident. That's why only one person died, and she was 85 so it was probably not a huge injury. It was caused by faulty points, and rail travel is still amazingly safe. ^_^
