One Final Thought On Translations

Mar 13, 2006 22:30

Dear M Wilbour,

I understand that the style of 19th century English writing required the author to take out the names of towns, but please don't do it to French novels. It's a major pain in the ass for those of us who really want to know where the Bishop lives, where Valjean becomes mayor, and any number of small things.

Sincerely,
Tay-kun

Really? That's rather idiotic. If you ever get ahold of the 1938 edition, translated by Lascelles Wraxall. I like it much more than Wilbour's translation, and it has the actual French text (Gavroche's ditties and the ending poem).

I checked it out from my library, but I haven't seen it anywhere except from a few obscure sellers on eBay. I think I'm getting it for my birthday...
