that answer seems fairly obvious to me, and the way the man worded it...i find inaccurate. he says that watching jesus suffer and die would be to garner ones own salvation, thus being a selfish act. while i can't speak to the individual motives of each person that might ponder this question, i CAN say that jesus didn't die for MY sins, jesus died for EVERYONE'S sins, and thus it isn't selfish to allow him to sacrifice himself, as it wouldn't be for my salvation, it would be to go with god's will and allow the salvation of all mankind.
