Storage
“Here are your car keys,” his wife Gloria used to say, “For god’s sake, Nick, put them in your pocket. You’d forget your head if it wasn’t attached to your neck.” And he would take the keys, kiss her goodbye, and leave. And every time he’d stick his hand in his pocket to fish for his keys he’d think of her.
He would be in the middle of a lecture when it would occur to him that he loved her more than life itself, and he would stop in mid-sentence, scribble “I love you, Gloria” on a page of his ever-present scratch pad, and tuck it into a pocket, only to forget about it again immediately.
She would find one every so often, smooth it out with the back of her thumbnail and tuck it into her journal. She had an entire collection of love notes, put into storage by him with every intention to act on it and then promptly never thought of again.
It did not make them any less precious to her.
