Well if these journals can be used to answer questions, it is time for me to post one. I am reading a new novel by Dean Koontz: Brother Odd. I was never a fan of Koontz in the past, but his new creation, the character "Odd Thomas" really intrugues me. This is the third book in the series.

"One day I'll come swimming / beside your ship" could refer to a literal(ish) parental role. One in which the father envisions supporting his daughter on her lifelong journey.  If he is referring to Homer's Odyssey, he may be indicating that as her father he is like Ulysses and can listen to the sirens' song, yet escape any danger.
