It's been a gorram long time since Kaylee's had anyone pay attention
to her sexual wants, and if that dry spell is going to continue right
on through her visit to her an actual whorehouse she might have to
give in to the urge to do violence.
"Be careful," says River as she passes Kaylee in the main room.
"Things are dangerous here."
"Seems to me like we never go anywhere that ain't," mutters Kaylee,
and River frowns before she leaves to join her brother.
And under other circumstances, Kaylee might follow her and try to get
her smiling again. But one of the cuter girls is sitting in the
corner winking at her, and Kaylee can see the chance for conflict-free
sex staring her right in the face.
"Hi," she says, smiling as brightly as she can. "I'm Kaylee."
"I'm Chari," says the girl, leaning closer in a way that gives Kaylee
a clear view of her chest. "I'm really happy to meet you."
"And I'm really happy to meet you, too," says Kaylee. She doesn't
add, "and your really nice cleavage," but she's thinking it
loud and clear as Chari guides her back into one of the house's many
rooms.
*****
They've all been assigned tasks to help fortify the house in
preparation for the upcoming unpleasantness, but Chari has no real
intention of helping in that fight and her new friend Kaylee seems to
be in the mood for distraction. It takes almost no convincing to get
the girl into her room, and things are hectic enough that their
absence will probably go unnoticed.
"I guess it must be nice here, working for Nandi and all," says
Kaylee. Chari's been at this long enough to know the girl is aching
to get herself laid, but she still seems to be the type who likes to
talk first. And usually Chari likes the talkers - it's easy, and she
gets paid by the hour no matter how the time is spent. But right now
the last thing she wants to do is talk about her life here.
"Yeah, Nandi's okay. A lot better than anyone else around these
parts," replies Chari.
And she does have to admit that Nandi was a pretty good boss lady,
right up until she decided it was worth risking everything they'd all
worked so hard for just because Petaline had to keep her gorram
baby.
She'll admit that she doesn't particularly want to stab Nandi in the
back, but she doesn't want to die either. And she's not going to
waste her time feeling guilty about saving herself.
Instead, she'll waste her time pulling Kaylee closer and pulling off
her clothes piece by piece. She's used to ignoring what her clients
look like, because whores aren't like companions and they don't get to
be picky, but Kaylee is honestly really cute. And Chari feels like
she deserves something nice, for once.
*****
Chari's room isn't quite what Kaylee had been expecting - she was used
to Inara's shuttle, with its expensive furnishings and professional
taste. Everything in Nandi's house seems like a cheap imitation, full
of fake gold jewelry and heavily worn furniture. It doesn't remind
her of exotic inner-planets so much as it reminds her of the room she
grew up in, but with incense burners and clothing instead spare engine
parts.
"I hope they don't start wondering where we are," says Kaylee,
although she's not worried about it enough to want Chari to stop
running her hot mouth across her collarbone.
"We won't be gone more than few minutes, so we won't be missed. And,
besides, what do you think everyone else is doing?" says Chari.
"Oh. Well, in that case, I think we're going to take a lot more than
a few minutes," says Kaylee. Chari grins, and then her mouth is back
on Kaylee's body, moving slowly from her neck down to her chest, and
then down further.
With Petaline screaming her head off as she gives birth down the hall,
no one pays much attention to the noises coming from their room.
*****
Kaylee doesn't seem to be the most experienced kid on the block when
it comes to rutting with other girls, but she's not exactly foreign to
the concept either, and it's nice to have someone actually bother to
think of her after they've meet their own needs.
"Oh, God, keep doing that," she moans as Kaylee's tongue hits exactly
the right spot. She twists her fingers into the girl's hair and pulls
her closer, and she's rewarded as Kaylee repeats the move, over and
over again until Chari can feel that old, familiar pleasure run
through her body.
And for a moment she's happy and warm as Kaylee curls up next to her
in the bed, but the ticking the clock on her drawer quickly reminds
her that she has somewhere she needs to be.
She waits until she's afraid that she'll be late, and then she
whispers, "I'll see you tomorrow." Kaylee makes a tired noise of
agreement, and then she's asleep again before Chari has even left the
room.
Chari slips into the night unnoticed by anyone else and makes her way
to the town square. She wants to think that none of the girls will
die because of her, but she's too smart to hold out much hope.
It was Nandi's own decision to fight back though, and Chari isn't
going to pass up the opportunity for enough money to get her off this
backwater moon. No one ever made anything out of herself rutting for
money without a guild certification, and Chari plans on having a
future one of these days.
*****
Betrayal isn't in Kaylee's nature, but she knows there are people who
can do it as easily as breathing. She wonders if it was hard for
Chari, but that's a question that she's never going to have a real
answer for. Kaylee was on Serenity when most of the violence
went down, and all she knows of Chari was the one shallow night they
had together.
And they weren't in love or nothing, but it still stings, and Kaylee
can't figure out why exactly she can't let it go.
"Some people are like that," says River, stepping out of the hallway
to rest her head on Kaylee's shoulder. And for about the hundredth
time Kaylee understands River's warning too late for it to do any
good.
"Yeah. Some people," she says.
