This is really starting to look like he was planning to murder the children and take his own life. Pure speculation of course but they suggest there was a matter before the family courts over custody and that gets messy at the best of times.

I may be flamed for this but part of me aches for this father. He must have been in hell to take such a step

It is unfortunate that some people consider children to be just another possesson that they own and not a person. It sounds like this guy was controlling and cared only about how he could hurt the girl's mother.
