babies all have different temperaments...count yourself lucky he doesn't have colic like I'm told I did.

YES, I am grateful that so far no colic! hehe, you're a very easy-going adult, even if you were a colic-y,cry-y baby. :)

How is his belly getting dirty?

not dirty, just the cord cleaning stuff. I think somehow a little bit of it irritated his bellybutton and he doesn't like the alcohol cleaning. Except today he seemed a little better with it, so maybe it's fine now? I just want it to fall off SOON!

What are you putting on it other than alcohol?

I also didn't think anyone still put alcohol on the cord stump anymore. 1) it keeps wetting the stump so it can't fully dry and fall off how it should. 2)Alcohol kills newly forming skin cells, and actually prolong healing.

When Nic was a baby I was told to clean it with alcohol at every change, his took like 3 weeks or longer to fall off.

When mae was a baby I was told to just wash it if somehow she got poop on it, and to only use alcohol on it if it showed signs on infection. Hers fell off before 2 weeks was up.

With little George I was told just do nothing, and it fell off at 7 or 8 days. The only thing that ever touched it was the herbal bath right after she was born. Christy had said if it looked like it needed it, she would put goldenseal on at the visits/discuss things, but it didn't need anything.

well fudge.
We put alcohol and goldenseal on it 2-3 times a day. Except maybe now I'll stop...

hehe I love that you still call her george. :)

Thing 2 isn't a crier, either, but Thing 1had colic and cried until she could crawl. Sounds like you got one of those elusive "easy babies." Lucky, lucky!

I like to refer to the "easy babies" as the started model, haha.

For what it's worth, when my last baby was born we heard/read something somewhere that the "new" best thing for umbilical cords is to just leave them the heck alone. No cleaning. No swabbing with anything. Just let it be. And sure enough, her cord fell off quicker than the boys' ever did. Just my anecdotal 2 cents.

I did nothing with dd's cord, and it fell off in 7 days. J. used alcohol on Finn's several times, and it took almost 2 weeks. Probably coincidence, but who knows.

I have heard this from many folks and also read it online. I wonder why we were told to do the alcohol thing? He doesn't like it and it creeps me out. Hmm...

Nurses at the hospital I went to (paramedics took me to the hospital after baby was born because my mom freaked out which is fine with me) told me that recent studies have shown that alcohol somehow inhibits the growth of new skin or something. Apparently the belly button is like a sore..They said as long as I kept the belly button dry it would be fine. However, baby accidently peed on himself (yup learned to cover it!) or the diaper leaked a few times and then I would swab it with alcohol just so I felt better and to make sure it wouldn't get infected.

You are so freakin' lucky!! And I'm sure a lot of it has to do with you putting in some elbow grease by working out and prepping. No tearing and no stretch marks..I'm jealous. And I don't know how you did labor for that long-I was not happy by the end of the 6 or so hours my labor lasted and I was about ready to give in. I'm amazed.
