mhaithaca's recent post just reminded me that I love soup. What're you favorite soups? My favorite ever is the tortilla soup from Manuel's. I love any brothy soup, though, and wish I knew better how to cook them ( Read more... )

That apple's carbs are largely offset by its high fibre content, and of course keep in mind that fresh fruit carbs metabolize much more slowly, and therefore much more thoroughly and with less impact on your diet, than refined sugars and HFCS.

My favorite soup is the tomato basil soup at La Madeleine. It's perfection!

I'd have to say my most favorite soup is pho. Pho Saigon (Kramer+N.Lamar) and Pho Hoang (Burnet+Rutland) are the best places I've had it over the years.

In second place is Alex's carrot-lentil soup. She's long gone (and delisted her number so I'll have to bother her dad to get back in touch) but memory of her soup, and cleaning it off the ceiling of my kitchen, will live on!

For clarification, Alex was the State Secretary of Beer, Weed, and Pizza. She's not an ex of mine.

Her vegetarian soups were AMAAAAZING, though.

Apples are one of the fruits lowest on the glycemic index. Berries are good for fiber. Vegetarian life is quite carb-y. You can do much worse with fruit. Tropical fruit (pineapples, coconut, bananas) have a TON of sugar. Most plans say it should be about 40% of your caloric intake.

apples and berries are two of the surprising "first fruits" that Atkins puts back on the menu, after the strictly-no-carbs initial stage.

Shay - have you read South Beach Diet? I think it can be tailored to low-meat paths pretty readily and my parents lost a ton of weight, at a sane pace, on that diet.

I heart the SBD and my natural eating pretty much aligns perfectly with phase 2 of it, but I don't lose weight from it! I know apples and lentils are supposed to be great, I just don't understand how eating things like that I'm STILL having trouble not-gaining weight... blech!
