There's also yards of small print. I'm not even sure if (assuming I manage to negotiate their sign up system) I'm signing away all sorts of rights! Need to check that.
They dare because they're so huggggge that they can get away with it! Basically, they infringed the copyright of millions of people and then said "sorry... here, have a pittance and now it's okay."

That seems rather unreasonable. If Google knows which books were affected and what company published them, why isn't it up to them to funnel settlement money back through the publishers to the authors? Or get the publishers to supply the author contact information?

Publishers have their own sign up -- there's dual layers of settlement, as one work can have more than one person claiming on it.
