candles;
Lee Taemin found a pack of candles on top of his dining table. He didn't know if his housemate, Key, left it there. He shook his head slightly, "Key umma is so silly sometimes." He picked up the pack and took it with him to his room.
Once in there, his curiosity got the better of him. He tore the pack open, and he noticed a piece of paper had fallen. He picked up the piece of paper. It read, "Remember the times when we used to be? Why not reminisce with me?"
Taemin raised an eyebrow, "What on Earth does this mean?" But even if he was skeptical about the words on the paper, he still took a box of matches from his closet and lit the first candle. He placed the candle on the plastic tabletop beside his bed and looked at the little blaze. And before he knew what was happening, a painfully familiar voice rang in his head,
"Taemin ah! Hurry up! Stop walking so slowly!"
"Yah! Onew hyung, you're too fast! Wait for me!"
"Aww, c'mon! It wouldn't be fun if you laze around! Come on! Aren't you happy we're out here?"
"As much as I love walking under the sun, hyung... I wouldn't mind walking in the park, i-instead of being on this m-mountain."
"But where's the fun in that? Come on, please?" Onew pleaded.
"Oh... alright," Taemin pouted, "I hate it when you have to beg, hyung. You know I can't resist you."
Taemin shook his head, trying to forget the memory. He didn't want to remember all those happy moments because it made his heart break. He took another candle and lit it as well.
"Taemin ah... I think I'm in love..."
"Really? Who's the lucky person?"
"Her name's Park Sunyoung. She's an amazing person. I've never felt so infatuated with a person before. D-do you think she'll like me at all, Taemin ah?"
Taemin took a deep breath, "Of course she'll like you, hyung. You're such a nice person after all."
"Thanks." Onew beamed, Taemin returned it halfheartedly.
Taemin felt tears stinging his eyes, he already told himself to forget about the past. But he couldn't help himself. It was in those times that he found himself feeling so... alive. He wanted to remember, and at the same time he wanted to forget. He looked at the two lit candles, and reluctantly... lit a third candle.
"Taemin ah... I don't think Luna likes me at all," Onew said.
"What makes you say that, hyung? You're a nice man. What's not to like?" Taemin tried to hide the pain in his voice, because he knew that what he was saying was all true. And it hurt.
"She only talks to me whenever it's important. But when I try to say something else, it's almost like she's ignoring me."
"Now, hyung. Let's not jump to any conclusions."
"You're right. Maybe she's just not used to me hogging her space most of the time."
Taemin sighed, "Whatever, hyung."
A week later, rain was pouring. Taemin sighed, "Can this day get any gloomier?" Then he heard someone knocking on his door.
"Who could that be?" He opened the door and was faced with a dripping wet Lee Jinki.
"Onew hyung! What's wrong with you!? Why didn't you bring an umbrella with you?" Taemin tugged at Onew's wet sleeve and pulled him into the warmth of his house.
"She's already taken." Onew muttered.
"Pardon?" Taemin asked.
"She's already taken, Taemin ah."
"Oh."
He saw his hyung looking so depressed, he couldn't stop himself from hugging Onew.
"Taemin ah?"
"Don't worry hyung. If you need anyone, I'll always be here for you."
He felt wet arms wrap around him, hugging him tighter. "Thank you," a voice whispered into his ears.
Taemin wiped away a few tears that had escaped from his eyes, he clearly remembered that moment. He found out that he loved his hyung dearly. Not like how a brother did, but how... a lover did. He couldn't help but remember how painful it was to find out that he loved Onew, although his hyung was already in love with someone else. He remembered how many times he had to stop himself from scowling every time Onew hyung mentioned Luna's name.
"Those where hard times," Taemin muttered. He seized another candle and lit it.
"Taemin ah... I think, I love you..." Those words that Taemin always wanted to hear made his heart beat fast against his chest. He stared at Onew as if looking for a sign that the older was joking.
"You're not kidding, are you?" Taemin asked, careful to not keep his hopes up.
"No... I'm not lying. I'm telling you the truth." Onew said as he brushed the back of his hand against Taemin's red cheeks.
"But hyung, what about...?"
"It doesn't matter anymore, Taemin ah. I was always blinded by the thought that maybe Luna was the one for me... but then that day, remember? When you held me tight when it was raining? How you told me that you'd always be there for me? I believed in those words. I believed in you... and that's when I noticed, that I was in love with you."
The candle's flame had lit out, as if some breeze blew it off. Taemin could still remember the kiss that followed after that. How passionate it was, how desperate... and full of longing. He took out one of the last two candles and lit it.
The next few days were full of loving gestures by both of them. They both felt like they were the only two people in their own little world. Everyone who saw them knew that they both loved each other very deeply.
No one doubted that the other would leave his lover behind.
Nothing could ever separate them, not even distance.
"You're leaving for Japan? Why so soon?" Taemin asked Onew two days before he was to depart.
"Remember when I said that I'd be leaving for this research paper for school?"
"Yes, but I thought your areas were limited only in Korea. I didn't know that you could..."
"I know, it's all too soon. I only received news today, I'm really sorry."
"It's alright. Stay safe, okay?"
"What do you mean? I still have two days. We can still spend time together."
"Oh, you're right."
Taemin sighed, that was just a week ago when Onew said that... as if fearing what was going to happen next, Taemin lit the last candle.
The day Onew set off for Japan with his group mates, Taemin met him off in the airport.
"Here. Take this." Taemin gave Onew something that looked like,
"A charm?" Onew asked, taking the charm from Taemin's hand.
"It's an 'omamori'. A lucky charm. It'll keep you safe while you're in Japan."
Onew smiled. He kissed Taemin passionately, "Thanks. Taemin. I love you."
Taemin smiled, "I love you too. Stay safe, okay?"
The candle's flame had lit out like that other one. Taemin couldn't stop the thick streams of tears falling from his eyes. He took out a crumpled piece of paper from his pocket. It was a letter from one of Onew's group mates. Apparently, they were on the plane that was in the news, the plane that had crashed.
Onew, was seated by the window, so when the plane crashed. Unluckily, he was part of the people that... died.
Taemin wiped away his tears when he heard the front door open.
"Taeminnie?" came Key's voice.
"Coming..." he muttered.
When he reached the living room though, Key wasn't alone. He had someone else with him. The guy was awfully tall, had a small face even though he had such big eyes. He resembled a frog, Taemin mused.
"Oh yeah... Taeminnie, this is Choi Minho. He's a friend of Jonghyun's, I asked him if he could come over to help me with some stuff... umm, you don't mind right?" Key asked nervously.
Taemin smiled, "Yeah. I don't mind at all."
Minho went near Taemin and drew out a hand, "Choi Minho. Pleasure to meet you."
"Same to you," Taemin took Minho's hand and shook it.
