I suspect American Gothic by Grant Wood got into the credits by mistake. The woman in the portrait is the farmer's daughter NOT his wife. It was heavily discussed in my Art History class many years ago. You might be able to find a website to confirm it these days.
The Arnolfini Marriage and the classic (is it Cranach?) Adam and Eve are two interesting views of marriage. One question that I think is even more pertinent today -- what with TV and all -- is the idea that there's no marriage without a witness. The artist is actually reflected in the mirror in the Arnolfini portrait; some art historians think this could have been their wedding document.
Are the fictional Desperate Housewives more real to us because we're "witnessing" their marriages?
