I'm a strong believer in disenfranchised groups reclaiming words used by others to negatively portray them :) And personally I don't have a problem with the word "whore", just with people using it in a negative way. To me it's a profession. As you say, some do it to get by. Others do it because (paradoxically, some might say) of the security it brings - one can practice this anywhere in the country/world. Oh, I should note that prostitution is legal in Australia, although I know it's not in the U.S.

I don't like the word "slut" in the way it's used by most people =/ Although there are reclamatory ways to use it.
