Interesting speech! I must confess, I have yet to read an Atwood novel (certain anti-science fiction comments of hers had stuck in my craw). Clearly I need to revise my opinion, or at least give her another chance ;).

My own problem with my current novel-in-progress isn't the gal!protagonist, but the guy!protagonist. He's sort of...flat, compared to her. He needs more *vital* flaws. (Or maybe I just need to find out what makes him angry...)

Obsidian Butterfly would be your next Anita book, yes? I'm afraid it goes a little pr0n-shaped after that... I'm hopeful, from Hamilton's blog comments, that the book after Danse Macabre will get the plot back. It'll have Edward in it, anyway :D.

(Incidentally, that comment about Anita's guy-obsessing galpals? Just...prepare yourself for the first chapter of Danse Macabre, is all I'm sayin'.)

Hey! I was looking for something in my journal, and found this comment, that I must have forgotten to reply to at the time. What did Awtoad (intentional misspelling of her name that she herself uses) say about science fiction? I'm guessing it might have been a disdainful comment about "escapist" science fiction, maybe? She obviously does write, if not "science" fiction, then certainly "speculative" fiction (Handmaid's Tale, Oryx and Crake), though her stuff is very socially-minded and questioning. Which doesn't give her the right to be snooty, of course. High art and low art, etc ( ... )
