This is another way of saying there's a black-scaled dragon coming in for a landing, beaming a toothy dragonish beam.

The motorcycle brakes, because dragons, in Thrust's experience, tend to mean one of three things: a commanding officer, impending fire, or both.

"Man, I hope you're sentient," Thrust says, failing completely to impress anyone with his command of the universal greeting.

That's okay, the universal greeting sounds stupid as frag anyway.

The dragon becomes a girl, and she gives him a look of utmost sarcasm.

Words? Greetings? Ffft. None of that.

"Just checking," he offers, and stands up. It's not the same sort of change Lucy undergoes.

"Guessin' you're Lucy?" Sometimes scaly, dragon, female, and shapechanger were Eden's descriptions, and those seem to fit the bill.
