There are three people sitting out on the grass by the farm house.
Three people and a cake.
Three people and a cake, and some presents.
Three people, a cake, some presents and party equipment.
One of the paper blowers is already on fire.
Say this about the Frays: They can throw a party.
hana fray,
loo fray,
sokka (au),
stephanie brown (au),
melaka fray

It also does not prevent any Fray from spotting the two figures jumping out of the plane, one tall and one short, both long-haired and kinda scruffy and both grinning enormously. Steph stays back to hug Sparrow in brilliantly abundant gratitude, which means Sokka gets to run ahead towards the farm.

Sokka is back in jeans and a t-shirt, a jacket for cool Kansas autumn. The leathers and parkas were left behind with the tent and igloo and all other supplies. His hair is long again and he really is scruffy with a beard on his chin. His wraps are on and patched, looking not nearly as frayed as they had been.
Aside from a lack of necklace at his throat, he hasn't looked so comfortable since Apocalyptica.
Even when the expression on his face is obviously a mix of excitement and nerves when he catches sight of his family.
A backpack is hefted up onto his shoulder and he starts toward them slowly.

Loo looks up from having her face cleaned to see where her sister's going, and shouts in surprise, wriggling away from Mom. "Unc' Sokka!" She runs past her sister, towards him, in her haste tripping over onto her face at his feet.
Mel stays where she's sitting, watching with a smile - albeit a smile that's about to burst into tears with relief.

But it's Loo that really does it. Loo, who'd stopped asking for him, who's running, running when she was still stumbling through walking when he last saw her, who shouts in surprise and excitement and screams 'Unc' Sokka' because that's his name and who does not trip onto her face, because Sokka drops his backpack and swings her up into the air the second she reaches him.
Grinning so wide it hurts his face and eyes misty enough for his vision to blur.
"LOUISE!"

You said cake
CAKE!
Which is to say, somebody small and yellow is kind of hovering behind a convenient banister. Watching. For any opportunity that cake might go unguarded.
Somebody who is drooling a little.

The car tumbles to rest in the grass and gets a quick zap for its trouble.
The yellow thing stares at Hana, in case she's planning more projectile launching.

Sonia is pretty sure that the blower is not large enough to make a Useful Fire. Which means that there is some kind of thing going on.
Ralph is already down and messing with the nearest shiny thing.
Which means he is immediately restrained from playing with the burning blower. Fire is bad for you!

Mel grins at Sonia over the head of a cake-ravaged Hana. "Birthday party."

Ralph is watching with amazement at this NEW AND AMAZING object. THAT MAKES NOISE!
And does not work when you try the other end, unfortunately.
Though he does have some fun trying to catch the blown-out end of Loo's blower. IT MOVES!

"Free!" Hana declares, holding up three fingers and beaming.
Loo is delighted at the game with Ralph, and keeps blowing it at him.

There's more than a little apprehension in the way he looks at Mel. And discomfort. And guilt.
But he does meet her eyes, at least.
"...hey."
Reply
She turns her head to Sokka, and meets his gaze with no hesitation, and a faint smile.
No anger, no resentment. Just relief that still hasn't settled.
"Hey."

He slides his hands into the pockets of worn jeans he'd changed into on the plane, leather and fur and parka left behind in the snow. But his wraps and gloves are new, fresh leather, made by himself. His hair is long and braided in places. He still hasn't shaved off the beard on his chin.
He's still watching Mel warily.
"Everything's okay?"
Reply
And a gentle smirk.
"Except that thing growing on your face."
