Katara passed a note on from Sokka. Mel read it quickly, but not thoroughly. He's in Metropolis, she's left looking after the children ( Read more... )

...That sounds remarkably like a car being dragged cumbersomely across a field.

This bears further investigation.

Steve emerges from the hangar, the fluffy mess that he calls hair all standing on end, wearing a thick coat and gloves that are covered in an uncountable number of burns and bizarrely-coloured stains. The positioning of the grime on his face reveals where he was, until a minute or two ago, wearing safety goggles.

Inventions stop for no man. And he should really have the generator finished by now, so he's going overtime on it, which to Steve means 'no sleep until it is done'.

He blinks somewhat blearily at the car, and calls to Mel: "Need a hand?"

"Just the guy I was looking for."

Mel grins - a halfhearted effort, but the thought's there - and leans back against the car. Steve may recognise it from the first few weeks he was at the farm, but it lacks certain key elements that distinguish most cars. Wheels, for one.

"I wanna get this rig running on energon."

If it helps, Steve's not exactly looking his best either, mad scientist get-up aside. His movements are a little too slow, his face a little too blank, his voice a little too close to a monotone. He's like an actor phoning in a role.

Nevertheless, he, too, is making a stab at presentability.

"Can do. What's it running on right now?"

"It's not," Mel answers blankly. "Was running on plain fuel - plain for my time. Don't think anything we've got comes close."

She rubs the back of her neck, knowing this is useless.

"I'm not a mechanic. You need to know what it was?"
