Cherished Weakness
By Shattered Tenshi
Kurosaki had to blink again to make sure he wasn't dreaming and that it was really who he thought it was standing outside his apartment door. That head of dyed golden brown hair, that familiar green jacket with the red checkered material inside the hood. It was a sight he thought he would never see again in his life. The male in front of him had his head down, twisting his fingers together.
The silence seemed to last forever when finally, the other lifted his head and met the eyes of Kurosaki. He bit his lip before speaking softly, "I heard you got arrested from the officer..." His voice died down, as if what he said was enough to explain why he was there.
Clutching the door knob, Kurosaki wasn't sure what he could say. He opened his mouth, but all that would come out was "Ah."
"I'm glad you're okay then..." The male quickly turned away and started to leave.
"Satoshi." Kurosaki watched as the male’s body jerked back, as if surprised at his call. "Do you have anywhere to stay?" Seeing Satoshi here, he could probably guess what had happened. Either way, Satoshi’s apartment was most likely still confiscated by the police.
The brunette turned around to look at Kurosaki before shaking his head. Again, he turned around to leave when a hand shot out and grabbed his wrist.
"Stay."
This wasn't what he expected when he used up all his courage to show up at Kurosaki's door. Satoshi watched as Kurosaki took out an extra blanket and pillow, setting them on the tatami. All he wanted was to see Kurosaki one more time before disappearing permanently from his life. After all, if Kurosaki put him in jail, it means that he doesn't want to see him anymore right? He wondered if staying with Kurosaki made him betray his sister somehow.
"You can sleep on the bed. I'll sleep on the floor."
"Eh? But..."
Kurosaki pushed Satoshi gently on to the bed. "Sleep. It's late."
Satoshi wanted to argue but stopped himself since he didn’t want to take away Kurosaki's time to rest because it was late. Mainly because he spent hours trying to build up the courage to walk up those stairs and press on Kurosaki's door bell. So he just pulled the blanket over himself and snuggled into the pillow, facing against the wall. He heard some shuffling sound behind before the light was turned off.
Hugging the blanket tighter, Satoshi could feel his cheeks slowly warming up. He had changed into a set of spare pajamas Kurosaki had and since he was sleeping in Kurosaki's bed, he was clearly surrounded by the smell and warmth of the other male. A smell and warmth that Satoshi could lose himself in.
Ever since high school, Satoshi had liked Kurosaki.
Kurosaki wasn't a talkative person at school so he always was proud of the fact that he was his first friend. He looked forward to spending time with him every day on the school's roof, watching the sky. No matter how scary lying at the edge felt, just as long as Kurosaki was there, everything was fine.
He liked Kurosaki so much that whenever he talked to his sister about school, it was always about Kurosaki. His sister had even jokingly asked him if he fell in love with Kurosaki.
It was true though. He had fallen in love. He fell in love with that warmth and kindness he saw in the small smile Kurosaki had on his face whenever he climbed over the fence and joined him, watching the sky.
All he wanted to do was stay by Kurosaki's side because he knew. Kurosaki was a lonely person.
And staying by his side was all he could do.
Soon after losing contact with Kurosaki, he lost his parents and his sister nearly had a break down. He felt himself losing touch with reality and could only follow his sister down the path of swindling. He just kept on numbing himself with one lie after another.
When he met Kurosaki again, he felt like his connection with reality was back in his hands.
He was so happy to see Kurosaki again. It was almost like they were back in his high school days. He didn't lose anything, his world didn't change and he was still by Kurosaki's side. He wanted Kurosaki to rely on him for once, which was why he told him about his sister's job, but he would have never guessed that his own words would be used against him.
Kurosaki betrayed him.
His sister always warned him about people’s hearts changing, but what he didn't expect to change was Kurosaki's heart. He always thought the small amount of warmth he found in Kurosaki’s smile would always be there, but he was wrong.
The funny thing was, despite his betrayal, Satoshi didn't hate Kurosaki. He knew that it was bound to happen one day. He just didn't expect Kurosaki to be the one to report him to the police.
He still loved Kurosaki.
Maybe that's what his sister saw in his eyes when the officers let the siblings meet one more time before putting charges. Maybe that’s why she told him she'll admit to all charges and get him out of there. Maybe that's why she told him to go to Kurosaki.
"Kurosaki will take good care of you."
When his sister told him that, Satoshi wanted to yell at her. He didn't need her youth in exchange for Kurosaki's guilt and care. His heart betrayed him though when he finally showed up at Kurosaki's door.
He knew he could never leave Kurosaki.
Thinking about his sister in jail, Satoshi couldn't stop the tears from falling.
Would everything have turned out differently if he never met Kurosaki?
Kurosaki turned on his side when he heard the small sobs coming from the bed. He hesitated for a moment before throwing off his blanket and sat on the bed. Placing his hand on Satoshi's shoulder, he felt the other male shiver. There was a few seconds of silence before Kurosaki spoke. "You don't need to worry about your sister." He paused before continuing, "I...she wouldn’t want to see you cry."
The sobs slowly died down. Kurosaki moved his hand away when he saw Satoshi sitting up and turning to face him. He frowned when he saw unshed tears in those warm brown eyes that had always smiled at him. Without thinking, he placed a hand behind the other male's neck and pulled his head down towards his lap.
He felt Satoshi stiffened for a second before relaxing as he ran his fingers through his hair before smoothing it out.
No words passed between the two.
It wasn't needed.
Ever since the beginning, Kurosaki knew he and Satoshi were different.
He knew Satoshi was well-liked at school, that everyone loved his smile and was taken by his bright personality. Yet Satoshi would only spend his lunch time with him, throwing hoops and watching the sky together.
He loved the grin on the other's face as he captured the sky with his fingers because it was the sky they were watching together. The warm sunlight was just like Satoshi's never-fading smile.
Kurosaki understood that he liked Satoshi. He always afraid of rejection though, that'd he scare him away and he'll never be by his side again. At that time, he knew they didn't have too much time left together. After all, it was their second year of high school, but before he could do anything, blood and darkness consumed him.
He knew Satoshi would blame him at least, if he doesn't hate him.
After all, he was the one who threw Satoshi and his only sister to the police, letting them suffer under the police's ruthless way of questioning, letting Satoshi know why he left. If he was Satoshi, he would definitely hate himself.
In his heart, Satoshi is always happy and full of energy. He didn't suit the job of being a swindler. His innocent mind would never work cunningly like a swindler's mind should work. His skills to deceive would only work young girls who longed for romance.
When Satoshi started speaking excitedly to him about his prey, Kurosaki knew he was too naïve as a swindler, that he'll never be successful. He couldn't say anything though, and just continued recording as Satoshi spoke.
He wondered how Satoshi's sister could be willing to send Satoshi to him. Knowing Satoshi, it was probably his sister that told him to come here. How could she trust him though? Did she see something that he thought he hid very well? He could almost see the helpless look Satoshi probably had on his face when he left the jail, leaving his sister behind.
Emotions were very hard to control. He knew that from being a Kurosagi, but he never expected himself to be in an emotional dilemma like this.
At the beginning, he sent Satoshi to the police in hopes of never seeing him again.
Because swindler don't need friends, and in turn, Kurosagi doesn't need friends or lovers either.
He knew if he kept Satoshi by his side, it would be too dangerous. Not only the police are after him, he had to be wary of normal swindlers as well. That's why he sent Satoshi away. Because in the dark world of swindling, Satoshi will never continue to be successful and never meet a person that would betray him.
That's why he chose to be the person to betray him. He couldn’t let Satoshi's innocence be harmed.
Even if Satoshi may hate him, Kurosaki didn't want to see a Satoshi twisted with hatred.
Kurosaki watched the other male on his lap, as he continued stoking his hair.
Satoshi was his weakness. It was dangerous to keep him by his side. But he has already sent him away once. Now that he was back by his side again, he didn't want to let go. He cared, and that was one of the main reasons he showed up behind the fence when Satoshi first got arrested. He cared too much about Satoshi. It no longer mattered if Satoshi hates him or blames him for everything.
"Satoshi, I'm never letting you go again."
The other turned his face around and looked up at Kurosaki. A tear rolled down his cheek before Kurosaki wiped it away with his thumb.
Grabbing Kurosaki's hand, Satoshi let his fingers touch his lips. He thought back to when his sister told him, "Go live happily with Kurosaki and never cry alone again." His sister really knew everything, doesn’t she?
Even if everything changes, he'll just have to stop this moment and make it eternal in his heart.
Satoshi placed a light kiss on Kurosaki's palm before holding Kurosaki's hand tightly with his own two hands.
"Okay."
Author's Note: I couldn't find a single fic with this pairing in the English fandom at all. NONE. ZERO. ZILTCH. So I gave up and wrote myself one. (but if anyone knows of a KurosakixSatoshi fic in English that I somehow missed...POINT ME TOWARDS IT) I'm extremely obsessed with this pairing right now. XD I don't understand how all the legal procedures and law work in real life...so let's just pretend what happened in the story made sense. =P Also...don't ask about the title...I wrecked my brain trying to think of something. T.T There was just no way I'd write fluff for this pairing...Kurosaki just doesn't work that way. D= Unless I go back in time and write a one-shot back when they're in high school. It's more plausible. ...God, I should stop giving myself ideas. But yes...comments are love.
