It was fantastic. So well crafted and enjoyable. Damn that John, even with their heart to heart conversation, I think you really conveyed that he still doesn't totally get Dean's needs. John tried, but still, not totally. I do love how you worked in the new info we viewers have about John's dad leaving without saying a real goodbye (of course WE know why, but John would not).
It of course makes such sense that despite killing the evil thing, the people were still psychologically damaged.
And BTW...did you write Dust Devils? That is my all time favorite story! Although this one was very good too!
Yay! I'm glad you enjoyed this, etoile. Oh John...he's SO hard to pin down because he's so, SO complex. While he is not perfect by any means, I do believe the poor guy loves his sons. He tries. And he tried here. I think in the end, even if HE doesn't get Dean...Dean gets HIM...even better, perhaps, than I do. And that's the most important thing.
Eyup! I wrote Dust Devils. Thank you so much for your kind words for it (both here and back when I wrote the story. I remember your kindness in comments and in reccing the story). That's also MY own personal favorite story of mine, too. :)
Another great story. I really liked the insights into John in this chapter. Perfect having Dean's love of music take the place of the chanting - or perhaps it was the other way around to begin with? Thanks for this - I'll be looking for the next one!
Thank you SO much, deangirl! I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. I actually thought I lost you to the creep factor back in chapter 6. Heh. Glad to see that you were able to stick around.
Yeah, John is such a complex character. I can't say as I got it "right", but I gave it my best shot. John does a lot of effed-up shit...things that I don't understand (like not calling when Dean was dying in "Faith"), but I do believe that he loved his sons, and Dean no less than Sam. He did, after all, die for him. So I think John had his reasons for doing what he did both in canon and in this story. We may not always agree or see it his way, but he wasn't simply being a dick. I wanted to somewhat show that here. And even if WE don't get John...Dean does. And that is what matters at the end of the day.
Time for bed. I'm sure I'll have more stuff to say n the morning but I can't go to bed without letting you know I spent the entire day reading this perfect work. They really should turn this into one of the books or even become the inspiration for an episode if that's even possible given how central John is. Awesome stuff. Can't wait to read more of your writing.
Wow. I can't believe it's finally over. I have really enjoyed following the progress of this story; watching it turn into the awesome fic that it is. I look forward to whatever you may have coming in the future. :)
Thank you so much, alec! I really appreciated all of your wonderful comments. I actually have a shorter piece coming next...though the holiday season is dead ahead, so it may be just a little while. But I'll be back in a bitsy. :)
Thank you so much, antrazi. Oh yeah...John is so hard to get. I don't completely understand him totally (who does?), but I think it was enough for Dean even if it wasn't completely enough for us. :)
