Yoochun still remembered how it went. The day when his brother was taken away from him by a big bearded man was imprinted on his mind as clear as a burning red hot iron. Their parents had sold his younger brother because they literally had nothing to eat. Yoohwan had been screaming and crying, but it didn’t deter their parents although his mother at least had the decency to cry. The money they received was too big temptation to give in.
And Yoochun? He was too scared to disobey their father so he just stood in the corner. He pretended he didn’t hear Yoohwan’s calling out for him, begging for his older brother to save him. But Yoochun, the supposed-to-be-responsible-older brother, only stood rooted on the ground.
He regretted that day ever since.
If only he was braver, maybe he could take Yoohwan away from their parents. They would be hungry and starving of course, since they were but nine and twelve, but at least they would be together. Their parents probably wouldn’t even miss them. On a second thought, they probably might, just because they couldn’t be getting the money they could have gotten when they sold their own sons. At their little town by the sea, children of the poor class were sold and traded as if they were worth no more than a sack of rice.
Yoochun himself was worth three sacks of rice, because he was old enough, fifteen years old when their parents finally decided to sell him. A wealthy merchant had just lost his wife alongside his son at the sea, and was in need for an heir. He was stranded at Yoochun’s little seaside town and by some stroke of luck, he wanted to adopt Yoochun.
His life was changed since that day. From the son of a poor fisherman who had nothing, to a son of a wealthy merchant who had everything. Everything that was, except the one person he was most dear of: his younger brother.
Maybe it was the guilty feeling that plagued him, but Yoochun would like to think of it as a responsibility. As an older brother he had certain obligations to find his brother and made him happy. An obligation he had long abandoned, but an obligation nonetheless. Now that he was well off as a son of wealthy merchant, he was free to find his brother.
But if only it was that easy. The family from his adopted father disliked him. Understandable, considering that he was practically a nobody, a beggar even. The merchant’s wife was dead and he remained a widower. And that made the merchant’s mother, Yoochun’s adopted grandmother, now reined the household. It was nothing much at the beginning since Yoochun was far too busy learning the trade and his adopted father’s business. Not to mention he was practically illiterate before.
Thus, he had to cramp fifteen years worth of studies in as few years as possible. Yoochun didn’t mind it however, since it was better than staying with his uncaring parents in his little town by the sea, waiting to be sold or just living his life as a worthless poor bastard.
Unfortunately six years later, when Yoochun was twenty one years of age, his adopted father succumbed to illness. A plague wrecked their city and it claimed the wealthy merchant as one of the victims. Not even the best doctor could heal him. They buried him, and built a magnificent church as his memento. Ever since then, as per the wealthy merchant’s last will, Yoochun would continue his work as a renowned merchant and brought wealth to their city.
There were some objections from the deceased’s family, but nothing too worrying. Other than his adopted grandmother’s yapping and few other irritating relatives, everything slowly began to fall into place. Yoochun was still struggling to master the trade, but little by little it grew better. Life seemed to be good on the surface.
Every night though, his dreams were plagued. And Yoochun knew why. He had to find Yoohwan. Whatever the cost, whatever the effort it might take, he just had to find his younger brother. He had to make this right. Even if it was a too late.
