The Strigoi
Chapter Two
By: Sharl
Two hundred years ago
Changmin sneaked out behind the guards. That wasn’t a hard thing to do, considering the guards were talking amongst themselves, obviously about the King again. Changmin’s father, the King, had just executed a few humans and one Strigoi last night under the reason of ‘disobeying the King’. From what Changmin had heard, the Strigoi had only wanted to remind the King about one of the noble’s request and apparently his father didn’t like that. So, he executed him and all the Strigoi’s humans.
As always, nobody dared to speak ill against King. Changmin was not an exception. He was old enough to know that his father was basically an unreasonable dictator. He didn’t listen to anyone, not even his advisors. He ruled the Kingdom with iron fists and always demanded even more tax from both the humans and fellow Strigoi.
Changmin hated him for it. However as the Prince, he was not allowed to go against his father and so he didn’t, couldn’t do anything. He just stood there, silently questioning his anger every time his father did something that wasn’t right. As a result the castle always felt so suffocating. Sometimes the pressure was too much that Changmin wanted to go outside the castle walls.
The first time he did this was a few years ago and since then, he had always sneaked outside every two, three months, and always during daytime. There were less Strigoi roaming the streets at daytime as Strigoi are nighttime creatures, but still there were some. The Prince was extra careful though. So far Changmin had never been caught and if he was careful, he can stay un-caught for many years to come, maybe even until he became the King. And for that Changmin knew he had to be patient.
Today the sun was obstructed by a cloudy sky, and the street wasn’t very crowded. But just to be cautious, Changmin drew up his hood. He didn’t want to be seen by anyone. If someone had recognized him, no doubt they would report to his father immediately. Changmin would be grounded if that happened.
Changmin didn’t have any specific place he wanted to go to when he sneaked out like this. Just the thrill of freedom for not being in the castle anymore was enough for him. He usually just roamed the street, blindly took corners and paths, and it almost felt like he was in an adventure. All the while he tried to listen to what people spoke about, his people, including the latest truthful development between Strigoi and humans.
The reports he usually heard at the castle weren’t the real situation as the King didn’t like to hear unfavorable reports. Changmin snorted at his own father’s stupidity. A King shouldn’t get all brushed and covered up reports, he should know the truth and take action accordingly.
But then again, the King’s word was an absolute rule. It had always been that way and would always be.
As a prince, Changmin would become King one day, and he vowed to be a better King than his father. The man could go rot in hell, and in Changmin’s opinion, he deserved to get a stake right through his heart. Changmin hated his father. He couldn’t wait for the day when he would be the King.
Without noticing where he was going, Changmin turned a corner and found himself in a shady part of the city. Few humans huddled up together, looking worse for wear, and a Strigoi watched guard over them. They must be newly bought, most probably by a noble. Recently, there were more humans being bought and traded over among the Strigoi nobles. It created disgruntled complains from the humans, but again, what the King said must be done so there was nothing the humans could do. What they lacked in numbers compared to humans, Strigoi made up in strengths.
Strigoi literally depended on human blood to survive. Animal blood might do but there was always a constant hunger which only human blood could quench. Strigoi needed humans, but instead they ruled over humans, so to speak. Talk about being ironic.
In Changmin’s opinion, they should treat mankind with more respect. They provided much needed nourishment after all. But instead they were treated like dogs, worse than how Strigoi nobles would treat the working class Strigoi. If they were lucky, the humans would be dead after a couple of years, mostly due to the loss of blood. But those unlucky ones stayed for decades, doing things that the Strigoi demanded of them before they would finally die.
For the Strigoi, it’s simple matter. They just need to contact the slave traders to request for ‘fresh stock.’ The Strigoi nobles then would pay the traders for a price and Changmin knew it created resentment among the humans. Slavery and human trafficking were frowned upon amongst the humans, but still, some of them needed money and Strigoi had plenty of gold. And so the practice continued, the proof was right in front of him.
Changmin watched as the humans huddled together, speaking among themselves before the guard hit one of them. Out of reflex, Changmin moved. He couldn’t watch and stand silent as humans were treated like that, not even when he was a prince. However, before he could come any closer, someone held his arm.
“Don’t. You’ll have a stake stabbed through your heart if you touch them. They belong to a noble, just recently bought this morning.”
The Prince turned. It was a Strigoi, a face that he had never seen before. His clothes were plain and looked old, there were traces of mud and dirt so this must be a working class Strigoi. The face was frowning now, but still Changmin noted the well defined features.
That was the very first time Changmin saw Junsu.
Junsu stared at the handsome face in front of him. Although partially hidden by the hood, he could still see the sharp eyes, full mouth and high cheekbones. He was also very tall. The hood this Strigoi was wearing was made from expensive materials and well-tailored, so this Strigoi must be rich. But he didn’t seem the rude type of sort, in fact he just seemed so surprised seeing Junsu.
A look of understanding passed through the other, and Junsu somehow breathed in relief. The noble who just bought those humans was known to be vicious to anyone who touched his belongings. He was also close with the King and with just few well placed words, he could have someone sentenced to death.
Once he was sure the stranger wouldn’t save the humans, Junsu let go. He warned the stranger one last time. “Don’t touch the humans. Keep away from trouble and no trouble will come to you.”
He turned around and was about to go when the stranger suddenly spoke. “Wait.”
“What?”
“You have to tell me more about that. Why is it not good if I touch the humans? Why? Who is the noble?”
Junsu frowned. This Strigoi was clearly treading dangerous waters. And the questions he asked were the type of questions that couldn’t be answered in an open street like this. From his appearance, he looked like one of the nobles himself, but why the sudden interest in humans? Nevertheless, he looked sincere enough. However, Junsu couldn’t stay long. He still had some errands to and work to do and if he didn’t get them all done by today, his family wouldn’t survive winter.
So he said this to the stranger. “I can’t, I have to go now or I’ll be late. Ask someone else. Just don’t touch the humans.” With that, he left the stranger without turning back.
The handsome features haunted him for the rest of the day, and plagued his dreams that night.
Changmin found out who the noble was, a close circle with the King and he knew this must be the reason why that Strigoi was so afraid to talk about it. This noble was known to be vicious and extremely rude to his humans. However nobody dared to speak out against him in fear of being sentenced to death. Indirectly of course, because the noble was cunning; he’d spread around lies and accusations so that the King himself, believing that the noble spoke the truth, declared the punishment.
The Prince hated it. He’d have done something if he could, but alas, his own power and authority were even less than the noble. If he spoke out against the noble, most likely the King would simply shrug and say that he was exaggerating. Changmin then would’ve been grounded and lectured for spreading lies.
And so he did the only thing he could. He sneaked out again, and this time he went straight to the place where he had seen the humans. They were not there anymore and the road was deserted. Still, Changmin hid in a corner and stayed there.
What are you doing? His logical mind asked, will you stay here and waste your free time like this? Hiding in a dark corner? What are you waiting for?
Changmin found no answer. Yes, logically, this was a stupid thing to do. He could rarely sneak out and when he succeeded, he just hid in a corner like a thief. What was he waiting for, really, to see the human corpses when they got thrown away by the noble? And what would to come from that?
But he knew one thing for sure. He wanted to see that Strigoi again. He didn’t know why. That Strigoi was not that good-looking. He wore muddy and raggedy clothes, and that meant he was a working class Strigoi. The Prince had nothing against them, but his father would have frowned if he knew that Changmin was talking to a working class Strigoi.
Right at that moment, the Strigoi walked past him. Changmin was so surprised he was almost too late to move. But at the last second he did, and he called out the Strigoi. “Hey.”
The Strigoi stopped, looking bewildered for a moment before he finally saw Changmin. “Oh hi, sorry, I didn’t see you there. Hello, we meet again,” the Strigoi replied. “What is it?”
“I was wondering if… you can explain to me more about that noble, if you have the time of course.”
Changmin waited in bated breath as he watched the Strigoi’s expression change. At first it was surprise, curiosity, and finally confusion. He was frowning again now. “Why?”
“I don’t know,” Changmin answered truthfully. Really, he had no reason whatsoever to explain his own actions. This Strigoi obviously didn’t know who Changmin was, and somehow it relieved him more than it should. He didn’t know anything anymore. He just knew that he wanted to spend more time with this Strigoi and the only conversational topic he knew was of that noble. The fact that he already knew everything about the noble had become irrelevant just so that he can spend time with this Strigoi.
-End of Chapter Two-
Author's Note: I'm going to put this fic on hold for a while The reason for this is because I'm writing this story at the same time I'm writing my other MinSu story
Golden Rule and well, the two stories have too much similarities in terms of setting and plot line (although yes, there are differences). Their plots are mixing in my brains and I can't focus on either one. So until Golden Rule reaches somewhere far ahead, I won't be updating this story.
On the other note, I think the plot line for this vampire MinSu will be quite long, and so I've decided to extend the chapters from just five to... well, I don't know, but most likely it'll be more than ten.
I will still be writing it occasionally, so it's not like I'm completely abandoning it. And as for the Golden Rule, well, I'm in a mad rush to finish it. Wish me luck, okay?
As always, comments are love <3
