A House is Not a Home

Kyuhyun glared at the window sullenly, wishing he could make the rain stop just by looking at it.
It had been raining since morning and Siwon (that stupid, imbecile, utterly idiot man) being a good employer that he was, refused point blank to take the day off before dashing out in the freaking rain to his coffee shops. Damn it, why couldn’t he take the car instead?
Because the traffic is really bad when it’s raining, Siwon had said earlier.
Kyuhyun grumbled again, throwing his cell phone into the sofa before stomping towards the kitchen. He rummaged through the fridge, realizing in horror that there was almost absolutely nothing in it except two eggs, a wilted leek, and a brownish pudding he should’ve thrown away a week ago. Slamming the fridge shut, he huffed and crossed his arms. He was hungry and there’s nothing to eat in the apartment. Maybe once the rain’s slowed down a bit, he could go to the supermarket.
Or maybe he could ask Siwon to do that, since the man had already gone out anyway. Grinning this time, Kyuhyun snatched his cell and proceeded to press ‘1’ on speed dial. The line connected quickly. Kyuhyun waited for the other side to pick up. And he waited. And he waited. After the seventh dial tone he gave up and shut his cell with more force than necessary. Scowling, he paced back and forth, cursing Siwon again and again because the man was just so fucking stupid to go out in this rain.
Siwon had been working really hard these days, especially since the Chinese investor expressed high interest to help Siwon expanding coffee shops all the way to China. And this morning apparently there was an emergency, one of the coffee bean suppliers backed off and Siwon had to find another one as soon as possible.
Kyuhyun sighed. The rain still poured heavily and unconsciously he pouted. What if Siwon got sick? Immediately he froze up. So what if Siwon got sick? It’s not like he was, ohokay, he was Siwon’s boyfriend and he was supposed to worry about the man.
…right?
The door suddenly clicked and Kyuhyun whipped around just in time to see Siwon stepped into the apartment, looking like a drenched puppy. He gave Kyuhyun a small smile and the student immediately noticed the flushed cheek, the glazy eyes and there could only be one explanation on that.
Kyuhyun crossed the hallway, feeling the other’s forehead and yup, the skin was definitely hot. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Siwon mumbled something incoherently before passing out, dropping like flies into the younger’s arms.
Oh fuck.
The thermometer showed 38.0 degrees, and it was still climbing up. The last time Kyuhyun checked, it was 37.7 and that was an hour ago. Aside from the fever though, everything else seemed to be normal, or at least so Kyuhyun thought.
God he hoped he was right. Okay, let’s focus on what Kyuhyun should do. Siwon was sick, so he was supposed to eat something nutritious, and healthy and easily swallowed. Kyuhyun opened his laptop and googled ‘food for sick people.’ Clicking on the first website, he skimmed through it and immediately scowled. Soup, porridge, soup, porridge, damn it. All were the things that Kyuhyun couldn’t cook. Why Siwon couldn’t eat cereal instead? That Kyuhyun could do without setting the kitchen on fire.
Huffing, he opted to go for takeout instead. There was a deli three blocks from the apartment and he knew they had some soups. It was still raining outside and he had to take a car if he wanted to go out. However the traffic was still really bad, even if it was just three blocks it might take two hours to go there and back again.
But Siwon needed to eat so that he could take his medicine.
There was a cough from the bedroom, and Kyuhyun dashed there, fearing that maybe Siwon was stupid enough to leave the bed or something. He sighed in relief when he saw the man was still in bed, buried under heavy covers with a damp towel on his forehead. The student walked over and dipped the towel into a basin he kept nearby. Squeezing it dry, he placed it back on Siwon’s forehead, hoping that it might cool the man down.
Siwon squirmed a bit and mumbled something, obviously delirious with fever. Kyuhyun sighed. He traced his lover’s cheek and jaw, slightly scruffy because Siwon hadn’t shaved in two days but the skin still felt smooth. And warm. Oh god, he needed to do something and he couldn’t, didn’t want to leave Siwon right now.
A clock was ticking quietly in the corner; the sound somehow was incredibly loud to Kyuhyun’s ear. He sighed again. The silence in the apartment was driving him crazy. Usually it felt comfortable, staying in the house and just playing his computer games, but right now he was getting agitated. Everything was different, like as if the silence was slowly suffocating him.
Kyuhyun wondered when he had become so accustomed seeing Siwon’s smile and hearing his voice. Suddenly he missed the man, he wanted to see him happy and well again, his usual stupid personality that made Siwon love him in the first place. Siwon had to get better. And soon. Right now it was only option left. Kyuhyun grabbed his cell and quickly scrolled down the name. “Hey Min, I need your help,” he said the moment the other line picked up. “Like, now.”
Kyuhyun nearly shouted with joy when the doorbell rang. Jumping to his feet, he ran across the hallway and opened the door. A scowling Changmin glared at him, but Junsu was smiling. Their hands were full with bags and immediately Kyuhyun’s mouth watered smelling all the delicious food.
“You owe me big time, okay,” The tall student said as a hello to Kyuhyun.
“I’ll tell you how to get the secret mission in Heart of the Swarm.”
Changmin narrowed his eyes. “There is no secret mission in that game.”
“Yes there is and as a matter of fact I’ve just completed it last night,” Kyuhyun replied in smug tone.
“Guys, seriously, this is heavy,” Junsu effectively cut any impending argument and strolled through the door. He dumped his bags onto the coffee table before glaring at the two friends. “Can you both stop all the game talk please? We need to eat and I’m starving.”
Kyuhyun looked surprised. “You guys haven’t eaten? Really?” When he called Changmin earlier, the man was on a date with Junsu and they both had just finished watching movie, or at least that was what Changmin told him. Apparently they skipped lunch.
“Not yet, you sounded so desperate earlier so we just wrap everything up,” Changmin replied as he began to unload his own bags. Boxes and boxes of takeout meals appeared, and he separated few of them on the side. “The fish porridge is here, steamed eggs in here, chicken soup in this one. There are tomato soup, cream soup, and pea soup somewhere, I don’t know where but I’m sure we got them.”
“They’re here, complete with the bread,” Junsu piped in.
“Thanks,” Kyuhyun said gratefully. With this much food, he didn’t have to worry about Siwon’s dinner later if the rain still didn’t let up. He took the porridge and chicken soup before grabbing a spoon and headed towards the bedroom. Hopefully Siwon had an appetite to eat something. Hell even if the man didn’t have any appetite, Kyuhyun would force the food in him. Siwon needed to eat damn it, and Kyuhyun would make sure that he did.
Kyuhyun put the food on the bedside table. “Hey,” he said slowly, “wake up, you need to eat.” He tapped Siwon’s cheek and when that didn’t wake him up, Kyuhyun scowled. “Come on, wake up, you have to eat something and take your medicine.”
Siwon mumbled something again before opening his eyes, “…what?” he asked in hoarse voice.
“Eat.”
“No appetite.” The older man rolled on the other side, back facing Kyuhyun childishly. The damp towel slipped from his forehead, but Siwon merely curled in further, hugging a pillow and pulled the blanket tighter.
Kyuhyun resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Why was it that sick people always have to be so stubborn? And Siwon was behaving like a six years old kid now. The student circled the bed, going over to where Siwon was currently sulking, and poked the other’s cheek. “Come on, I got the food here.”
“I don’t want to,” Siwon whined again, furrowing his brows and continued to close his eyes.
This time Kyuhyun couldn’t hold back the irritated sigh. “I’ll feed you, just… eat something, okay?”
Miraculously, Siwon got better almost immediately. His fever had gone down to 37.2 degrees when Kyuhyun took the temperature later that night, still a bit high than normal but it was acceptable. The medicine and food Changmin brought with him really worked well. He and Junsu had left immediately earlier after the three of them had their late lunch/early dinner. There were still some left for midnight supper if Kyuhyun wanted to.
Speaking of dinner, Kyuhyun glanced at the clock; it was almost time for Siwon’s medicine again.
He walked over to the fridge and took out the tomato soup. Pouring them into a clean bowl, he put it into the microwave and waited as the soup was reheated. Could Siwon eat solid food now? Well, the man did seem to get better so maybe it was worth a try. Kyuhyun crunched a couple of toasts into the now warm tomato soup and stirred them together. Bringing the food back into the bedroom with a glass of water, he was happily surprised to see Siwon was now sitting on the bed instead of lying down.
“Feel better?” Kyuhyun asked as he walked closer.
Siwon looked away from the television and glanced up at the student. “Yeah, thanks to you.”
Kyuhyun fought down a grin seeing Siwon’s obviously better state and instead pushed the tray towards the sick man. “Here, eat this and it’s time for your medicine again.”
Siwon smiled a little. “Feed me.”
“You can eat on your own now.”
“But I’m still sick.”
As if to prove his point, Siwon began to cough. Kyuhyun felt his eyebrow twitched, he seriously suspected that Siwon was faking the cough. But after few moments he finally relented. “Fine,” he said with a long sigh, “But you have to eat all of this or I’m not going to feed you ever again.”
Two days later, Kyuhyun was awoken by the sound of TV in the background and the smell of coffee. His brain started to process what the hell was going on before groggily opening one eye. The clock showed 7.30 AM and it was way too early for anybody to start functioning. Yawning, he closed his eyes again, deciding that he was entitled to get some more sleep. Unfortunately a bright cheery voice forbade him to sleep.
“Good morning Kyu!”
Urgh, Kyuhyun wanted to vomit, that voice was too cheerful, too bright, too- wait. He knew that voice. His eyes snapped open. Despite the sleepy state, Kyuhyun smiled back. Siwon was standing in the doorway, freshly showered and shaved. The man was wearing an apron, a tray full with waffles and tea was on his hand. The dimpled smile that Kyuhyun hadn’t seen (the one that he missed so freaking much) was there.
Ah, now the apartment felt like home again.
