During interviews or any other intimate one-on-ones with strangers, there is a nervous laughter that seems to cut through my block of gibberish. now will this company pay you enough so that you can save it up, work a few (years? months? days?), then be able to leave with your soul intact?

I've always liked the idea of working for a year or so somewhere, saving it up the money you earn, and then leaving for long stretches until the money runs out, and you do the annoying corporate job all over again.
Not that I've ever done that, but still...
