I could easily 'see' Marseilles again in my mind's eye from your description (the colours of the Mediterranean Sea's water were incredible!) and wish we'd visited Aix-en-Provence.

Avignon is wonderful; so easy to imagine all those buildings crowded with red-clad cardinals scheming in every corner, and Nimes' colosseum is where I swear I saw a ghost, or at least an echo of a Roman centurion marching down the curving concourse ahead of me.

If you visit the Pont du Gard, don't forget to sing the child's rhyme:

Sur le pont d'Avignon,
On l'y danse
tout en round!

you hadn't mentioned your fellow tourists-- guess things have settled down with them or you're with another group? glad you're having fewer problems with this leg of your trip.

Tomorrow, we're getting a full dose of history-we'll be visiting Avignon, with its famous medieval palace of the Popes, and in the afternoon, we're going to Nimes, with its many well-preserved Roman monuments.
