Poll for Shared Wisdom

Our line up of speakers in November is quite exciting. We have someone doing a different approach on writing the drabble and after that an ebook and fan fic writer talks about the differences of writing the two.

Also, if you missed it, speaker anahcrow talked about writing her ebook Uneven and ebook publishingI thought it would be interesting to learn a ( Read more... )

My first fandom community was POTC, and that was only because POTC inspired me to write and i went looking for someone to share with. I discovered at that time, just how many excellent writers there are in various fandoms. I do not consider myself a member of any particular fandom now, I look for writers whom I will love-- one is in BTVS, a number are out of POTC-- and if a writer is good, I'll read them regardless of what they are writing about. SPN, SGA, HP, Transformers-- doesn't matter to me, I'm reading for voice ( ... )

Interesting.

doesn't matter to me, I'm reading for voice.

You are really reading the way you do original writers.

yeah.. a habit started when I first realised that no beginner-books writers wrote as funny as Doctor Seuss! ^_^

The biggest difference, of course, and the best-- is that I can talk with the writers! And sometimes, I can even co-write with someone who inspires me. And that's what makes fandom so wonderful...

I ticked only the "reader" box in the first question because, even if lately I'm tinkering with fanfics, I don't think about myself as a writer but as just a reader with an hobby.

Writers, in my opinion, are others :)

Hmmmm. Well, I see that as how I restarted writing myself. I certainly didn't immediately dive into long narrative, but that is not for everyone.

Fandoms... sallymn November 3 2008, 20:39:40 UTC
... are The Sentinel, Magnificent 7 and Blakes 7 (which I've been in for nearly 10 years now, I tend to be a keeper :)

AS for what I write (besides very veerrrryyy slowly), I've done original, now write mostly fanfic, but basically anything I want (the benefit of being totally amateur)

Yes, that is the benefit. Wake up, do what you want.

I've come to suspect that I got into this whole writing thing differently than most (or at least many). Starting with fanfic or slash seems to be the norm. Oddly I'd never even heard of such a thing until after submitting my first stories to a publisher.

I started up my marketing efforts with a blog, then started adding to my f-list. That's when I read posts by other writers talking about how they'd started by writing fanfic and/or slash. Pitifully I had to look up the words because I didn't even know what they meant. (Quit rolling your eyes!)

It does look very interesting, though, and one of these days I'm going to find the time to read some!

How did I find this LJ community? anahcrow is on my f-list and made a post about how she was the featured speaker here talking about Uneven. I followed the link and liked what I saw, so I joined the community.

I'm glad you like the community. We try to provide diversity, original writers, published writers, fan fic writers and with our topics also.

I really love hearing how others create, stepping into their worlds.

I am just discovering reading ebooks, so I enjoy things reced to me by my readers. One author from Samhain I hope to have here as a speaker sometime since I'm just reading her work now. In fan fiction, I have read stories better than many published works on occasion. I guess it's like everything, you have to know who to read.
