The Phone Call
Maki Horikita sat with her head low in the waiting room of the doctor’s office. She was anxious for the test results from last week’s check up. Lately, she hadn’t been feeling well, which brought her to the doctor. She had an awful feeling about this, and she hoped that it isn’t what she thinks it is.
The medical assistant called her in, and was soon taking her height and weight. Then she was led into one of the examination room for the doctor to attend to her as soon as it was her turn.
After waiting which seemed like an eternity, Dr. Christine Yamashita finally came inside the room, holding her medical test results. Maki swallowed anxiously as she waited for Dr. Yamashita to settle on a chair in front of her.
“Well, Dr. Yamashita,” Maki asked. “What’s wrong with me?”
Dr. Yamashita looked at her straight in the eye and told her. Maki put her face in her hands and wept. She knew it! Dr. Yamashita patted her shoulders. As a doctor, she had seen this scene a million times whenever she tells the results to women. She sighed as she reassured Maki that it’ll be okay.
On the bus heading home, Maki sat in a zombie-like trance. She still couldn’t believe what her OB/GYN had said to her: she tested positive for pregnancy. How did this happen? She mentally slapped herself of the stupid question. Of course, she knew how it’d happened. The question was, how did she allow this to happen?
She bit her lower lip nervously as she imagined what the father would say. She knew without a doubt who it was because she had only been with one guy. Hell, she had lost her virginity to him. Her heart beat faster as she thought up ways to “drop the bomb” on him. She can’t go through this alone, and she needed his help. She had to tell him without possibly scaring him off.
##
Maki had been with Ryo Nishikido for about a year already. The first time they met was at the freshmen orientation held for the incoming recent high school grads who will be coming in to Meiji University. She had won a full-ride scholarship to one of the most prestigious university in Japan.
She was a naïve girl from a small fishing village, and everything about the city was exciting. She was checking out the high ceiling of the huge gym where the orientation was held, when she smacked into someone. It happened to be Ryo, who turned around with annoyance his face, but soften when he saw Maki looking wide-eyed at him. She quickly bowed her apology and high-tailed from his presence. Ryo, who had been hanging out with his friends, followed his eyes to where she went until the sea of people swallowed her from his line of vision.
After that not-so-impressive first encounter, Maki and Ryo had more chances seeing each other. They mostly had the same classes freshmen were forced to take, but they had never actually talk. She was shy and only talk when she needed to, and he was a popular, outgoing guy who didn’t mingling with the likes of her. That changed, however, when they were in their third year of college.
After a long time being in the university, Maki had made friends and had opened up to a lot of people. She was invited one night to go to a party held by one of her friends. After much convincing, she and her best friend Mao Inoue went to check it out. It turned out that Mao’s boyfriend, Keiichiro Koyama, was Ryo’s friend. Maki and Ryo were formally introduced, and from then on, they became close, and eventually became a couple.
During the beginning of their relationship, Ryo had been restless, and wanted to do more than just cuddling and making out. Whenever Maki turned down his sexual advances, or worst, stopping him at the last minute, he always gets angry and wouldn’t talk to her for the rest of the night, making Maki guilty. After so many cycles of this incident, Ryo threatened her that if she wouldn’t sleep with him the next time, he would break up with her.
Maki didn’t want to break up with him since Ryo was her first serious boyfriend. To her, he always made her feel pretty and special. On the other hand, she wasn’t sure if she loved him enough to have sex with him. She decided to risk it, so one night after a romantic date, she gave in to his desires and lost her virginity to him.
On the night of their first year anniversary, Ryo wanted to have sex without a condom. At first Maki refused, but Ryo kept persisting about it. If she actually loved him, she’d agree to it, he had said. Maki did love him, but was wary about the idea. He was getting frustrated and annoyed with her as he tried to get her consent. Since she didn’t want to destroy their celebratory mood, and to prove that she actually was in love with him, Maki agreed, but she knew that this could be the biggest mistake ever.
##
The bus abruptly stopped, bringing Maki back from her reverie. She got off, and walked to her apartment, which she shared with Mao, still thinking hard what she should do. When she finally got inside the apartment, she noticed Keiichiro’s shoes, and heard them in Mao’s room. The noises the two were making reminded Maki further about her situation, and quickly left.
Maki wandered around the park. She sat down on the cold metal park bench, oblivious to the runners zipping by, old couples walking hand-in-hand, and children playing in the sandbox.
After a few hours of contemplation and realizing that the sun had set, she headed slowly back home, hoping that Mao and Keiichiro didn’t make this a sex marathon night. She slowly opened the door, and was greeted with Keiichiro in the kitchen, half-naked with only a flimsy towel wrapped around his lower half and a sandwich in his hand. Maki looked at him in shock as Keiichiro yelled “sumimasen” while running back to Mao’s room. A few seconds later, Mao, wearing Keiichiro’s dress shirt and boxers, came out of her room.
“Okaeri,” Mao greeted sheepishly. “Gomen about that. Keii didn’t mean to give you a free show.” She giggled.
Maki smiled. “Iie,“ she said. “As long as he doesn’t make it a habit.”
“Are you okay?” Mao suddenly asked, bringing the mood down. Maki was alarmed.
“Yes,” she lied, nodding her head to emphasize. “What makes you say that?”
“You’re not in your usual bubbly mood.” Mao came toward her, inspecting her closer.
“I’m never bubbly,” Maki replied, trying to avoid Mao’s eyes.
Mao looked closer at her. She was now inches in front to Maki. “Something’s wrong. What happened?”
Maki couldn’t take the burden she had been carrying since leaving Dr. Yamashita’s office, and burst into tears. She told her everything that had happened so far, and how she felt. Mao hugged her sympathetically. After a while, Maki’s sobs turned to sniffles.
“Please don’t tell Keii until I tell Ryo,” she begged, wiping her tears with a handkerchief.
Mao nodded. “Of course,” she assured her. “It’s not his business, anyway.”
Maki nodded, and retreated to her room. After a quick shower and a change of clothes, she got in bed. She heard Mao bidding Keiichiro goodbye and closing the door. A knock came on the door moments later. Mao opened the door.
“Are you okay?” she asked, standing at the doorway.
Maki nodded and gave her a small smile.
“I’m gonna call it a night,” she said wearily, settling deeper into the covers. “I’ll just call Ryo about it tomorrow.”
Mao nodded, greeted her good night, and closed the door. Maki turned off the lamp beside her on her side table, and stared at the ceiling. She was really tired and wanted to sleep, but instead, tossed and turned throughout the night.
She glanced at her clock and sighed in frustration. It was already 4 am, and she hadn’t slept a wink. Realizing that she was not going to get any sleep anyway, she got up to call Ryo. She decided that she might as well get it over with. She got her phone and slowly dialed his number.
##
The phone rang three times before it finally woke Ryo up. Groggily, he checked the clock and cursed. It’s 4 am. Who the hell would play such a joke? He felt for his phone on the nightstand, and answered.
“Hello, who’s this?” he croaked sleepily. The caller didn’t say anything, but he heard a girl sniffling on the other end.
“Maki, is that you?” he asked, slowly waking up. He sat up on his bed, and turned on the lamp on the nightstand.
“Yes,” he heard her speak, and then cries. He didn’t asked what’s wrong, but they were quiet for a few minutes. After a while, Maki’s cries became sniffles.
“I went to see Dr. Yamashita,” she said between sniffles. “We have a problem. I’m pregnant.”
Ryo didn’t say anything for a moment. “Are you sure?” he asked after a while. “I mean, are you sure it’s mine?”
“Yes, baka!” Maki said, slightly angry. “You’re the only one I’ve been with.”
Ryo didn’t know what to do, so he panicked and hang up, pretending that the line had cut off. He turned off the light, and thought about what to do. He stayed sitting up, leaning his back against the headboard, and let the darkness envelope him. He banged the back of his head against the wall as he thought of what to do. He just didn’t know what to do.
The phone rang again, making him realized that the room is getting brighter. He checked the clock and was surprised that it was 5 am. It had only been an hour since he talked to Maki. He let the phone rang one more, until he answered it.
“So, why did you hang up?” he asked, trying to get the mood to lighten up. He knew that it was Maki on the other end. She didn’t say anything.
“So, what are you going to do now?” Ryo asked.
“I don’t know,” she replied. “You?”
“Me? Why me? You.”
“Why is it only me?” Maki asked, her voice laced in frustration.
Ryo became humbled at her question. She was right. It was not her alone, but they both were involved in this situation. They were both at fault, especially him who insisted of not wearing any protection. Instead of arguing back with her, he cleared his throat.
“Okay, this is what I think we should do,’ he said softly, trying to soothe her. “We need to think what’s important here.” He paused, unsure if his decision he just thought up was the right thing to do.
“Well?” Maki asked anxiously. Hearing Maki’s voice confirmed Ryo that he was going to do the right thing.
“What do you think is a beautiful name for our baby?” he asked softly with a smile.
