Chapter 1

Two phone calls Jun Matsumoto received that day that would set his life in a whirl. One was from his Beaux Monde agency, his favorite booker, Estelle. The other, from an unknown lawyer named Victor Ley.

“Jun, sweetie, good news,” Estelle’s raspy voice that had been ruined by cigarettes shrilled through the phone lines. It didn’t help that she had such heavy New York accent. “You’d never guess. Martinelle from the house of Dolce and Gabbana called. He just booked you for a big campaign for their Fall 2010 collection!” Estelle’s voice got hoarse a little in the end, almost losing her voice.

Jun felt like jumping up and down like a girl whose crush had just asked her out, but instead opted to act cool through the line. He smiled a little, clearing his throat, before he piped out, “Cool.” He knew Estelle long enough to know that she had rolled his eyes at his reply.

“Listen, Junnie-“

“Estelle,” Jun winced at the nickname she usually use to annoy him.

“This campaign is big. Huge. Humongous. Enormous. Gigantic. Ginormous.. Want me to go on?” Estelle tends to over exaggerate. “You should be really happy! This is a boost for your modeling career!”

“I am,” Jun replied calmly. Estelle just sighed. She knew him long enough he doesn’t really show excitement. She also knew they couldn’t move on if she reprimands him for it, so she just gave the details of the photo shoot. Jun took note. One month from now, he’d fly to Venice for the on-location shoot. He marked his calendar that hung on the wall panel next to the phone by the kitchen counter.

Pop! Champagne fizz overflowed from the newly opened bottle and Jun poured himself a glass. He really should call one of his friends to celebrate with him, but decided against it. He strolled over to his black leather recliner, but no sooner did he lean his head back when his phone rang yet again. Settling the flute glass on the side table next to the chair, Jun got up to answer.

“Mr. Matsumoto?” a man’s voice crackled through the line. “May I speak with Jun Matsumoto?”

“Yeah, you talkin’ to him. Who’s this?” Jun replied, skeptical. He didn’t recognize the voice.

“Hi, this is Victor Ley from Ley, Tang, and Sanada Law Firm,” the man introduced. “We need for you to come to our office. We’re located---“

“What’s this all about?” Jun interrupted, his brows deepened into a frown. He wasn’t being sued, was he? Jun thought up all the people that might have something against him and shuddered. Long list.

“It’s about a very important matter that requires your presence at our office.”

“I don’t-“

“We’re located in Addams Plaza on Lexington Avenue. Please come as soon as possible, preferably now.” With that, Mr. Ley hung up before Jun could say anything. Jun stared at the receiver, still unable to believe that just happened, and placed it back on its cradle. He considered not showing up at the location, but curiosity got the best of him. Taking the car keys on the foyer table, he locked the door of his penthouse apartment, and left, leaving the unconsumed champagne behind.

The receptionist looked up as Jun walked up to the counter. She smiled widely, eyeing him more deeply than she would normally at the many clients and visitors coming up to her everyday. This one looked like an actor or a model. In New York City, they’re a dime a dozen. However, this one looked priceless.

Jun was unnerved how she had been looking at him hungrily. He checked her out, too, and decided that she wasn’t too bad. Long blonde wavy hair, 5’5”-6” give or take, smooth skin, perfect teeth, luscious lips… Jun’s eyes diverted southward below her neck and smirked his satisfaction. Full bre--

“Mr. Matsumoto?” a voice behind him called, drawing Jun back to reality. The receptionist quickly ducked her eyes down and pretended to be busy. Jun looked back and saw a stocky man in his 50s with graying hair. He must be one of the lawyers of the firm. He certainly looked the part: gray suit, white shirt, ugly tie, and squeaky black patent leather shoes. Jun nodded and walked up to him.

“I’m Victor Ley,” a bit of Hispanic accent came out from the man with outstretched hand. Jun shook it warily. Victor Ley motioned to follow him and led him down the hall. Inside the conference room, there was a long table right in the middle taking up most of the space. One side was floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking the street 20 stories down. Jun’s eyes adjusted to the white walls and the bright fluorescent light glaring overhead.

“Please sit down,” Mr. Ley pulled out a swivel chair, which Jun sat gingerly. He was startled that there were a couple of people already sitting across from him, a boy about eight and a woman in her twenties. What surprised him more was they were also Japanese. Jun gave them a slight nod in greeting.

“This is Mao Inoue and Kevin,” Mr. Ley introduced them. They bowed to Jun. The boy’s head stayed low, however. He swung slightly left and right on his swivel chair. Jun stared at the boy. He knew him somehow. The boy had a Yankees cap on, covering his eyes from Jun, but from his angle, Jun could see the boy’s mouth. He was pouting a little, nervous or shy, Jun couldn’t tell. But he knew that mouth. Jun grew pale. Did something happen to his brother?

“He’s my nephew,” Jun gasped quietly, not believing this was happening. “W-why is he here?” he looked up in shocked at Mr. Ley, then at the woman. Mao Inoue, was it? His estranged brother had moved away from the house years ago back in Japan when Jun was in high school. This was the first time he had seen his nephew. He had heard that Jin had had a family and was living in New York, but he didn’t think he’d ever see any of them.

“Well, that’s why we wanted you to come down here to the office to explain,” Mr. Ley cleared his throat before continuing. “I have been assigned by the District Attorney in charge of the case to notify you of his family situation. Your brother Jin had been arrested for illegal possession of narcotics.”

“He’d always been a baka,” Jun muttered under his breath, and Miss Inoue slightly smiled at the Japanese word. Mr. Ley blinked, unsure on how to reply to that.

“Where’s Jin’s wife?”

“She had left your brother and Kevin two or three years ago, and we can’t seem to locate her,” this time, Mao Inoue spoke up. Jun was startled at her voice. She sounded so in control, confident.

“So, who are you, then?” Jun looked at her sideways. He had a feeling who she might be, but he needed to make sure.

“I’m from CPS.” Bingo. Child Protective Services. In charge of finding homes for unwanted kids. Jun suddenly had a strange feeling that this was not going to go his way. Well, technically, it would go his way, but it was not what he wanted nor planned. Jun inwardly cringed at that thought.

“What we would like to ask you, Mr. Matsumoto, is if you could be Kevin’s legal guardian for now,” Mr. Ley said, eyeing him intently. Jun thought it sounded more of a command than a request. He didn’t like how Mr. Ley was looking at him, full of expectations, not going to accept a negative answer. He fought the urge to squirm under the lawyer’s stare.

“You see, Mr. Matsumoto, we called your parents-“ Mao started to say.

“You called my parents in Japan?” Jun stared at her in unbelief. “Lucky you,” he added a bit sarcastically. He hadn’t even kept in contact with them. How did CPS find his parents’ phone number? Mao looked at him as if to say, “duh, it’s my job.” Jun frowned and stared at this woman, who seemed to know more than what she was letting on. He thought she was pretty cute, okay, he admitted she was beautiful. Her black hair, which was tied into a bun, shined under the fluorescent light. Her wispy bangs styled to the side, framing her face nicely. Her eyes were shaped nicely, not too big, not too small. Her lips were nicely shaped, too. Jun trailed his eyes down. Her white blouse peeked out from under her black blazer, a couple of buttons of the blouse were unbuttoned. A silver necklace with an “M” pendant hung smoothly around her neck.

She must have sense his eyes on her because the next thing Jun saw were her hand over her necklace. She frowned at him, glaring her dark brown eyes. Jun’s lips almost gave out a smirk, but he controlled himself.

“Your parents refused to have Kevin with them, saying that they were too old to raise an active kid,” she continued, her eyes stayed on him. “You’re the next of kin.”

“Whoa, wait a minute,” Jun leaned back and gave a small mirthless laugh. He waved his hand to stop them from speaking any further. “I don’t even know the first thing of taking care of a kid. Can’t you find his mother’s parents or something? I’m too busy right now.”

“A lot of parents are busy, Mr. Matsumoto, yet they manage to raise them.” Jun had frowned at the woman. He will not lose to her!

“We can’t find the other grandparents, Mr. Matsumoto,” Mr. Ley spoke up, sensing a fight coming on that he had to nip at the bud. “We understand that it’ll be a change with Kevin around.”

“You think?”

“Mr. Matsumoto, your rudeness will not be necessary here!” Mao slammed her hands on the table and stood towering over Jun. He merely glanced up at her and smirked. Mr. Ley cleared his throat as a warning, causing her to apologize under her breath. She continued to glare daggers at Jun, though.

A quiet sniffle suddenly came in the lull of the conversation, and everybody stopped. They all had forgotten about the most important person in their discussion. Kevin’s shoulder shook, his head was even lower than earlier and he cried silently throughout the ordeal. The adults looked guiltily at each other.

“It’s okay,” Kevin’s quiet voice cut through between sniffles. “Uncle Jun doesn’t have to take care of me. I can stay at the foster care until Dad comes out. I don’t even know where Mom is.” He suddenly looked up at glanced at the woman sitting next to him. “Miss Mao, can’t I stay with you, though? At least until you can find a foster parent for me?”

Before she could answer, Mr. Ley said, “I’m sorry, Kevin, Miss Inoue can’t let you stay with her.” At the same time, Jun said, “Okay. He can come stay.” They all looked at Jun. Two looked skeptical, and one looked hopeful.

“Really, Uncle Jun?” Kevin brightened up a little, then frowned. “I’m not making you do it, right?”

Jun mentally kicked himself for what he just did, but there was no way he would back up now. Besides, he was his nephew. He smiled at Kevin.

“No, for reals. You can stay with me.”

A/N:
Ah, here's the fanfic I had told yamapine about since she had asked when I'll be able to write a new one. Hmm... I'm iffy about the poster. Maybe I'll change it and put the other characters in, too. Maybe.

The guys' characteristics were seen a little from this drabble when I was writing in the middle of Chapter 4 for this story. It was a way for me to see how these five guys interact with each other.

This marks the end of the inspiration drought I told ohnia about. LOL. Hope I can keep it up.

Thanks for reading and please comment.
