Versailles

Versailles ended on Monday night.

Spoilers behind cut.

I guess the last episode was okay as a series finale, though I did feel Philippe forgave Louis for the death of their father way too easily. Mind you, if the show hadn't been ending, I suspect that plot point - the rift between the brothers - would have been dragged out for a little longer. But it was the last episode, and I'm glad that Philippe (who I like way, way more than Louis) got a couple of final heroic moments, and a reconciliation with the love of his life, the Chevalier de Lorraine. Loved the little scene of them linking arms with Princess Palatine and marching off to be fabulous, all three together.

Also loved that the Chevalier helped Delphine escape, even if all the other poor Protestants were left languishing in prison.

Louis and Madame de Maintenon I don't care about. Would happily have seen them both die horribly even if it was historically inaccurate.

Well, when I say watched, I probably wouldn't have watched it due to squeamishness, but I would have been pleased anyway. ;)

I am sad about Monsieur Colbert, though, the only truly moral person at Versailles - unless you count Fabien Marchal, who ended up locked up in his own dungeon.

All right, so maybe Fabien deserved it, having spent so much of his life torturing and murdering people in that same dungeon, but the person who was 'only following orders' getting their comeuppance isn't satisfying when the people who gave those orders remain untouchable.

Oh well.

Anyway, it's been a fun series. Doesn't surprise me, though, that the BBC gave up their Inside Versailles little afterword pieces (in which, after the episode had aired, actual historians would talk about what happened in it) after the first season. The actual historians probably decided they wanted nothing whatsoever to do with the show for fear of appearing to endorse the content.

What else appears to have ended is the heatwave. We actually had rain today - not much, but more than we've had for...I can't remember how long. Anyone else experienced this weird phenomenon of water falling from the skies?
