I appreciated the fanservice. They really know how to make sure they have our attention, lol.

But I did find it a little strange that he got to decide his own quest. Wouldn't the king or priest/priestess normally be the one to select the quest? Otherwise someone could just choose to go down to the lower town and gather some herbs, like Arthur said, lol

I thought that whole intro scene was like Arthur doing a vision quest or something...more like he was meditating on what quest to do and it came to him?

You might be right. Although, vision quests normally involve some kind of drug, I think. But hey, maybe this one did too and they just couldn't show it because it's "a family show".

Beautiful cinematography and a lot of references to older legends. Interesting take that not only did it take the combined efforts of the three (although Gwaine's contribution seemed unclear. Seems he was just there for the slash) but that Morgana's gift was necessary to complete the quest. That's a strong hint that Merlin had to screw up in 3.05 in order to achieve a loftier goal.

So why do I not like this episode? I'm here for the Arthurian legends and ultimately making this Merlin's quest and not Arthur's fucks over 1500 years of storytelling and tradition. I can't believe that the average viewer, upon reflection, isn't going to hate this episode.

To some extent I can see your point, but I also think that it isn't too much of a loss on Arthur's part. The point of the quest was for Arthur to prove himself worthy, but he has already done that on numerous occasions (not to mention he's destined; the once and future king). These points set him apart from those that may have undergone a quest of this nature. He IS an exception to the rule (And who's ot say it was always legitimately done alone in the past?). So this quest is in a way, more to prove his courage, it is much more on a personal level. Plus, I don't think Arthur ever interacted with the Fisher King even in legend.

"Not Arthur" ... *intense gaze*
*blinks* ... "He'd do the same for you" (you just had to mention Arthur and ruin the moment, dont ya Merlin)

I'm pretty sure Merlin says, "I'd do the same for you." :)

You're probably right. I can only clearly hear "...'d do the same for you." and the M/A shipper in me immediately assumes Merlin would bring up Arthur in some inappropriate time.

he did say he'd do the same for you,but he was reffering to himself, like saying your friend would do the same for you ,him(merlin)being the friend.i dont know if that is talking in 2nd person or what.

Gwaine and Merlin - Campfire scene

"Why'd you want to do this?"
"Same reason as you. Help a friend."
"Arthur is lucky to have us."
"Not Arthur" ... *intense gaze*
*blinks* ... "I'd do the same for you."

Merlin is Gwaine's only friend.
