Obi-wan never owned R2-D2 or C-3P0. };> Hard to say, though- so many astromech and protocol droids look alike, maybe after 20 years he forgot exactly what those two in particular looked like. Of course, more than Obi-wan, I have to wonder why Owen Lars didn't recognize the droids, especially C-3P0, in Ep. IV. You know, the droid that had only been on his farm for years between I and II. He still had the same voice modulator and name...
As for space travel... It could be pretty quick in the original trilogy as well. True, we don't know how far apart systems like, say, Hoth and Degobah are from just what we see in the movies. The sense of timing that we're left with is curious though.
I can see the Owen Lars not recognizing them though... C3PO didn't have the Golden body when Lars owned him---and he had little if any connection to R2D2.
I would suspect a Jedi's memory to be greater than that... and for him to have been waiting or expecting contact. Thus, his confusion in ep IV is not there.
Plus, you didn't ahve the annoying habit in 1-3 of his identifying himself as a protocol droid fluent in over 6 million forms of communication. yeah yeah yeah... Lars needed a robot htat could work on the farm.
