It had worked. She had been worried when she couldn’t wake him, but he woke yesterday. Her relief had been overwhelming. Everything wasn’t perfect though. He was weak, his memory was sketchy.
She hadn’t told anyone yet. She couldn’t, not until he was Sirius again. So they talked when he was awake. About Harry, and the war, and everything that had changed since he’d been gone.
Then he had asked the question she couldn’t answer. She wasn’t accustomed to not having the answers but she didn’t for this one.
How could she be sure his death hadn’t been his destiny?

Today is a good day. Quiet. They’re looking through her photo albums. Harry and Ron are waving to us, smiling. Hermione says it was taken at Bill’s wedding.
Everything’s changed so much. They aren’t the children he remembers. It’s jarringly obvious every time he looks at the woman next to him. He tells himself she’s just a child; young enough to be his daughter. It doesn’t work; in some ways Hermione was never a child, and now he can’t see anything but the wonderful woman in front of him. Sirius barely connects her to the little girl in the photos.

Part of her wishes he acted more like the old Sirius. It’s been so long since she’s had gentleness in her life She’s afraid things will get complicated if things don’t change.

He has to deal with these feelings. He can’t tell her, she’d be horrified. He couldn’t blame her, he already felt like a lecherous old man for having these feelings, so how could he blame her for thinking it.

She watched as the large black dog ran in circles chasing the children that had come over to pet him. Turning into a dog hadn’t stopped her feelings. He was more affectionate this way. He’d taken to sitting with her as she read at night, head in her lap, while she stroked his fur.
Her mind was racing in circles too. He was Harry’s Godfather. He wasn’t that old. Caring for him, and proximity, had caused her feelings. She’d had a crush on him years ago. He only saw her as Harry’s friend. She’d done nothing to change his mind.

Sirius placed the glass of juice on the tray. Today was Hermione’s birthday and he was going to surprise her. He was going to tell her today too. He decided to risk the rejection.
“Sirius, you’re up early,” she said softly.
“Happy birthday,” he turned and smiled warmly. “I made you breakfast.”
He took the plates from the tray and set them on the table in front of her and watched as she ate. She needed to know that his feelings were changing. He had to tell her, and hope he was right about her.
“Hermione, we need to talk.”
