Child of a Hidden Sea by A. M. Dellamonica. It's portal fantasy, and the main character approaches the new magical world with the kind of curiosity and reactions I would expect someone would actually have in the situation. Plus a very interesting magic system.

I don't think I've heard of Elizabeth Marie Pope, but those sound right up my alley.
