Derpy, now 20% cooler.

Derpy Hooves being in the newest episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic made my day! The fandom is going crazy, and rightly so... they spotted her, they named her, they popularized her, and now she’s an official character in the show with a definite personality/voice! I have to say, the creators of MLP: FiM really are embracing their ( ( Read more... )

I haven't been heavily involved in the fandom beyond watching it with friends and liking it, but I do like what the creators acknowledge about the fanbase and embrace. It's a great series :D

I'm not too heavily involved in the fandom either (though compared to how little I dabble in fandom anymore at all, I suppose I'm more invested in it than usual), but all the bronies I've talked to online and in person have all been incredibly nice people c: I know there are some that take it too far, but I've never come across any issues personally, and I think part of why I'm so attracted to the show is the fanbase itself. It's just so positive and welcoming. Add to that how the creators themselves treat/recognize the fans and it just makes for a great all-around fan experience... great material (the show), great fans, great creators... it's all so nice I can't stand it x3

I love the show. <3

And I got into it for basically the same reasons you did... nostalgia for the toys I obsessively collected and the show I adored as a kid, and wondering what this one was all about.

It makes me super happy though, and I wish a show like FiM existed for me when I was a kid.

Honestly, I'm not sure if I could have appreciated FiM as much if I were a little kid... I'll never know, but I'm glad I'm an adult fan. I know I'm not missing out on any of the little gags and shout-outs the creators put out there for its older audience members, yet I can still appreciate the whole "feels like being a kid again" aspect I still get when watching cartoons c:

I love being a fan now, as an adult. But I think it would have been a great show for me as a kid, so I wish I'd had that opportunity. However, I like that it's a show that CAN be enjoyed by an adult audience too. And I love that the show itself acknowledges their older fanbase!

(I do, however, get annoyed when a lot of the brony types act entitled to it, and are angry when they make merchandise aimed at kids, because bronies are the "real fans" and hasbro is "betraying them" by catering to children.)

Yeah, that is a little annoying. I get the annoyance over the inaccuracies on some of the toys, but not, like, the RAGE over it. The show was made to sell toys to kids, it just happened to be awesome enough to stand on its own and attract an unexpected group of fans. I think the show's creators are doing plenty to show they are very aware of/have much love for bronies, more than I would have ever expected. Some fans just get big heads, I suppose.

Whenever I come across drama or stupidity in the FiM fandom I try to remind myself that any large fandom is going to have its share of problems, and the few idiots that stand out shouldn't get to the majority of us who are sane. Most bronies I've spoken to/met have all been pleasant, normal people who just so happen to like small colorful cartoon horses.

I must be the only Brony out there who does not particularly care for Derpy.

I never *particularly* cared for her, I just thought it was awesome that the show's creators made her legit. It really shows that they know about, appreciate, and listen to their adult fanbase.

There are some fans upset about Derpy's portrayal (some going as far as saying she appears genuinely mentally impaired and they can't laugh at that) but for the most part, everyone seems excited. It was just so unexpected!
