Skeleton Tree

Quite a while back, I was gifted with a $50 gift certificate to a local independent art supply store. The other day, I finally cashed it in and got a high-quality set of watercolour pencils. The night before last, I decided to play with them and painted this. I call it Skeleton Tree.

Beautiful and creepy! How are the pencils to work with?

Thanks! I enjoyed them, but am still figuring out the best way to distribute the colour. I used hatching on the large black area, and it came out too stripy looking for my liking. I went over it again after it had dried to make it cross-hatching, and it still has a bit of the striped look. I just need to experiment more.

I mostly worked with dry pencil and painted water over top afterwards, but then I went in afterwards with a wet pencil for more intense colouring.

I've read, in some symbolic analysis somewhere, that how we draw trees often says something about our relationship with our mother. I'm not sure how much credence to give that.

So...a wonderfully executed picture of a pensive turkey vulture, another of a tree-skeleton, and a haiku about "cthonic love letters," am I wrong in seeing a theme here? I hope life is treating you well. Your art is always interesting.

I can't imagine that this picture has anything to do with Mom. As for themes, well, once a goth chick, always a goth chick, I guess.
