The art of irony is saying something without actually saying it.ribenademonJuly 22 2010, 15:27:14 UTC
According to the BBC report -yes!

It did seem out of character for Shanks.
In which case sorry Shanks if you were.
I read it several times to try and decide if he was being ironic. I decided to post on the basis that I was not sure...the worst case scenario Shanks or someone else would say "Duh! Irony!"
I'm so glad the police can protect me by pushing over people selling newspapers and hitting them in the back with a baton. Maybe if I'm really in trouble they'll come over and kick me in the tit next time.
I assumed the police would protect the public by doing things like catching criminals and protecting people, rather than hitting them.
See Pete's posts for some more serious arguments that I agree with, but seriously, I'm pretty disgusted by this post. I assumed you were being ironic until I read the comments.
I want to add... I appreciate justice may be the wrong word there, but one of the things I hate most in this world are people that act like twats. People that act like they can do whatever they want, and noone can do a damn thing about it.
The body language of this guy SCREAMS that is what he was doing, so yeah, I can't help but feel he got his comeuppance.
Again, maybe death is a little harsh ;)
But I just can't help but feel pleased the cop didn't get in trouble. I don't see that as excessive force. He pushed a twat - dude should have moved.
Who gets to decide what 'acting like twats' is? I find a lot of people annoying. I don't attack them. I may WANT to, but I don't, because I realise that my own whims and moods are not really a reliable arbiter of what's right and wrong. I'm reminded of myself as a kid. I had such a temper that my nickname was 'psycho.' I quite regularly punched people who annoyed me. I got in a lot of trouble for it. A lot of the times, I was reacting to people goading me for having a temper and who I firmly believed (and still believe in some cases) to be twats.
Then I grew up and learned that it was possible to control my actions. It's called civilised behaviour. Adults need to live up to that standard. One of the most important difficult duties of policemen is that they have to defuse situations when people lose their tempers and get violent.
They should not be causing those situations themselves.
I'll post poroperly when I'm Mormon my phone, but I really cannot accept pushing someone to be excessive force. I totally agree with everything you have said, I think we're pretty much on the same page, but had he not been acting like a twat A. He wouldn't have been pushed (he didn't really react to the baton so I can't imagine it was a very heavy blow... More a warning shot as it were) and B. He wouldn't have fallen over because his hands wouldn't have been in his pockets.
I think that is would also have been better to push him out the way rather then arrest him and cause more trouble (they weren't to know the dude would fall and all this would kick off). If the cop had gone down for pushing someone out the way, that was clearly testing the patience and authority of the police o think that really would have been wrong, and undermined everything they try and do.

The IPCC can still do the officer for misconduct and he can still be found guilty.
It does seem to be a very unfortunate incident handled badly -whether the guy was a dawdling dick or not.
