You know, I'm not even sure what exactly they should be called in English (I've been calling them matriculation exams), but it's the big exams. I'll just call them YO from now on. Anyways, the first one is out of the way

I do find it a bit weird that wether or not you get a laudatur (which I guess, is the best possible grade?) depends on how it went nationally and not on how well you did on your exam. Hmmm.
No more math lessons ever again!!! I loved that part about the exams, to know that it was the last time I had to bother with those subjects.
It is kind of unfair. The grading system follows the Gaussian distribution so the amount of people getting a grade goes roughly like this:
Laudatur 5% Eximia cum laude approbatur 15% Magna cum laude approbatur 20% Cum laude approbatur 24% Lubenter approbatur 20% Approbatur 11% Improbatur 5%
So five percent also always fail >:P Last Spring the exam was really hard and the points needed for laudatur were only 48/60. I didn't think it was very hard this time, so it's probably higher than that.
Yeah. Especially with math. I'm not terrible at it, but I hate it. I might not have even taken the whole additional exam if mom hadn't hinted on a monetary compensation for a good grade xDD
That seems a bit whacky. Seriously. In Germany grades only depend on how you do in your exam. So you'd probably 55+ points for what'd equal a laudatur. But at least you'd know it would only depend on your performance and not how everybody else did. The only area where we have something like you describe is when trying to go to uni. Most times there are more people applying than places available so it'll depend on your school grades and on how many people applied.
Also, I didn't take a single exam I didn't need. Actually I did my Abitur (highschool degree which enables you to go to uni) with just the number of classes one had to have. Had I fluked out in even one, I would have been fucked. I didn't, though. heh.
