I think you'll just have to go out and get a vacuum, it's a necessity. :/
Just make sure that second hand tanks don't leak. Either see it with water in it or if they have a recently dated photo of water in it. Probably don't go with tanks that were used for reptiles.
Larger tanks are more stable, but require larger water changes.
I'm not too good with healing sick fish, though. All the ones I had that got sick just ended up dying.
I just read your earlier post that they are goldfish. I had thought you had betta fish, since those are the only ones that can be kept in those small bowls (they have a special air breathing apparatus, but even then, bigger tanks are much better for them). But even then you can't have two betta males, together, lol.
http://thegab.org/ This should be a good place to look for info. I haven't really looked into it, since my focus was aquatic plants (plantedtank.net) and freshwater shrimp.
Ghengis died, so I've just got Kublai swimming in the tank. It's only 3 gallons, and I'm aware I should upgrade. Hence, why I'm looking at second-hand aquariums. But for now, I'm trying to keep him as healthy as I can and to try and make his life as un-difficult as possible. I feel so bad for him, though some of the pustules seem to be falling off!! So that's good!
I personally hate gravel and stick to the squished marble things. Then when cleaning the tank, just move the fish to a cup or something, and rinse off the marbles. Like I suggested before, snails can help out a lot, as long as you get the right kind.
Even with a good gravel vac, I have often had to toss the gravel cause it just won't get it clean enough.
