Legends Comments

I don’t normally do long comments on actual episodes of shows anymore, but I feel the need to comment on one of the current seasons. If you watch DC's Legends of Tomorrow and you haven't watched the show that aired 5/12/16, you might want to stop reading, I'm going to comment on events that occurred in that episode. And frankly throughout the first season, plus past seasons of The Flash.

I'm specifically concerned with the character arc of Leonard "Captain Cold" Snart.

Okay from herein are spoilers so you might want to stop reading if you haven't seen the episode.

I think I've now worked through all my anger and swearing of "THEY'VE KILLED LEONARD" (this does not mean I am not living very happily on my Isle of De-Nile... just that I have moved past and I will probably be able to watch the episode next week without throwing things...)

What I really want to talk about is the character arc the writers gave viewers (while totally ignoring their inability to do math).

When viewers were first introduced to Leonard Snart on The Flash, he was a cold (pun intended) blooded killer. A thief who could plan jobs down to the second and pull them off without a hitch. A man who had no qualms with looking a member of his own gang in the eye and shooting him dead. The only person Snart seemed to care about (other than himself) was his younger sister, Lisa. And even this seemed to be a bond formed by blood and shared pain (he referred to his sister on more than one occasion by the nickname “Trainwreck”.)

He continued to steal and wreak havoc on The Flash, until two things happened. His sister was taken hostage by their father, forcing Leonard to kill him, and he made a deal with Barry Allen (the Flash) to help out. Of course he turned on Barry, freeing the metahumans he was supposed to help transport, but despite that Barry still believed there was good in Leonard.

When Legends of Tomorrow began, one of the taglines was “Hero ain’t on my resume”, a line that Leonard says in the first episode. As he and his partner, Mick Rory (AKA Heatwave), join the Legends, they make it clear that they are there to pillage and steal. They aren’t interested in being heroes.

But Leonard goes from villain to anti-hero to hero as the show progresses.

The arc, the growth of his character, showing how he moves from the cold man who wouldn’t even consider an alternative other than killing (or stealing) to the man who considers and thinks of a team. Who maroons his friend instead of killing him (despite what the rest of the team thinks). To the man who finally makes the ultimate sacrifice for the team. And becomes a hero in the eyes of his friends.

It’s too bad the writers didn’t think there wasn’t another way to do it without killing him.

RIP Leonard Snart. And now I REALLY, REALLY want my chibi... or honestly just ANY chibi of Leonard... or a Leonard to cuddle... my little Funko is too hard to cuddle...
