I've been party to several conversations about science and religion. When someone makes a connection between science and religion they know little about one or the other, or both (don't think that it's always religious people knowing too little about science!). That little amount is more dangerous than it is helpful. Always, the statement made ( Read more... )

My problem with the "science vs. religion" debate is the "vs" part. I don't see why they can't peacefully coexist. I've said many times that scientists cannot be atheists, which has confused some people.

I think each "side" can know its limitations; science cannot explain everything, but neither can religion.

I don't have particularly religious views, but I do see a spiritual side to things that is supported by science.

I disagree on a few points, but mostly I didn't mean to imply that there is a "vs" part. The point is that some people try to make links between the two, and most often they come across as ignorant of one of the doctrines.

Besides that, I think it's perfectly feasible that scientists be atheists if they so choose (or discover), but I happen to live the life of a scientist & monotheist (sudo-pantheist).

Lastly, I believe that science is fully explained by my own religion views, but not vice versa. Science, to me, can't fully explain the universe within the confines of science and the human mind.

The reason I say that scientists can't be atheists is that they of all people know that not everything can be explained by science. There has to be something else. It doesn't have to be called God or put one into a particular religion but it seems totally ridiculous that a scientist could say that there is nothing but the hard, explainable, physical world in front of us ( ... )

An atheist is someone that rejects the idea of deities. It's totally feasible that scientists are atheists and don't believe in a power outside the realm of the natural universe. That's not to say that they believe we can explain everything, but it is the rejection of a higher power outside of nature. I personally think it's a valid position to take, even if I don't take it ( ... )
