Once MJ understood why his dad was the way he was and was able to forgive their relationship could progress. Although I do find it kind of weird how Joe hadn't seen his son in so long and didn't know what was up with him. Could it really be true people were keeping him away because they didn't want him to to call them out on their shit on the way they were managing his life? :O idk. He said he would go to the gates and get turned away... but yeah who knows. Can we believe everything Joe says? We saw what he said about Omar :P

Smokey Robinson said [in the Ebony tribute] he hadn't seen MJ for, I think, eight years; that MJ had "divorced" himself from a lot of people, including his family. Now, whether that was MJ's personal decision, or if it was his people keeping him secluded... who knows? According to Tito [on Entertainment Tonight], though, MJ was at their parents' anniversay party three weeks before his passing. Joe must've seen him then.
8 years seems like a hell of a long time. In the oxford speech in 2001 MJ said he wanted to have a relationship with his father. Why would he stay away from him for so long and say that? haha. Maybe they talked on the phone at least.
